This week I'm going over my experience with the UTM SE emulator for iPadOS (and iOS) — This was a super fun experiment, and I was able to get Windows XP, and a bunch of Linux distros running on iPadOS!

While there is still a long way to go with this tech, there are some promising signs, and if it keeps progressing, the future could be very exciting with emulation and virtual machines on the iPad.

Why can't Apple just allow a complete MacOS Finder and Disk Management App. rather than the complete MacOS. That would totally solve the issue many of us have with the clunky file management of iPad Pro and also allow for the missing disk management.

I used to run the JIT enabled version of UTM on my M1 iPad Pro. Virtual machine performance was considerable better than using UTM SE, but not as good as UTM that has access to the hypervisor on a jailbroken iPad. The JIT version of UTM was viable on iPad OS 16, because I could compile a utility called Jitterbug with my Apple developer credentials, allowing me to JIT tether my M1 iPad Pro to itself rather than a second Apple device across the LAN. iPad OS 17 broke the way this works, such that JIT tethering now only works if you physically connect (i.e. via cable) your iPad Pro running the UTM JIT version to a JIT server, e.g. Alt Store running on a MacBook. As consequence, I now consider the M series iPad Pro as the most pointless product in Apple's product lineup, as iPad OS cripple it's amazing hardware to a closed ecosystem of mostly mediocre smart phone apps. I've now replaced my M1 iPad Pro with a Windows 11 Tablet as this runs a desktop class OS, with desktop class web browsers and supports Linux development etc via WSL2.

We can only hope the great people working at Asahi Linux keep doing their invaluable work.

I stopped updating my M1 iPad starting from iPadOS 16.2 and waited for a jailbreak or something that would enable me to virtualize windows. It fortunately happened (thanks to the developers of trollstore) and I’m now able to run Windows 11 at “full speed” on my M1 iPad (without even jailbreaking it) and it helped me sooo much doing some little tasks that would require a Windows computer or a Linux machine. That was honestly not the smoothest experience I have ever had due to the lack of RAM but it was really enjoyable and in my case useful. I hope one day Apple will find a way (/compromise) to take full advantage of the M chips in iPads. As of now, iPads are for me really limited powerhouses.

Fun Fact Android recently got the Winlator development update. Winlator is a Windows 10 Emulator for Android and it works like a charm, people have played Skyrim and other games in it and I am using it to play old Visual Novels and other games, it runs smoothly on anything with more than 6GB of RAM and an Antutu score of above 700k so yeah my old Poco F1 with the Snapdragon 845 Processor can run it. I recommend people buying Android tablets and using them if they want a light weight Windows usable device

I spent hours trying to get Windows XP installed on my iPhone 15 but it took too long and near the end I accidentally closed UTM. On my M1 MacBook Air it took like 10 minutes. I don’t know why Apple doesn’t allow JIT on the App Store. Even with AltStore or SideStore you still need a Mac with you to enable JIT.

you should sideload the non-SE version, as it is a much better upgrade from the SE version

I‘d like to have something like windows 10 or 11 to enter REAL microsoft office, since it is not available on iPadOS. And no, I don‘t want to have a windows laptop or macbook as a secondary device. I only wanna use my iPad, because everything else works out for me with that.

Please tell the truth that UTM SE is practically unusable in real life! The use of the full-fledged UTM can barely be useable in my recent trial!

iPad Pro 13 M4, installed Windows XP, went super smooth. But i found it useless, as it’s super slow and as mentioned in the video, they have a problem with sharing files. Thus you only can install/ get files/games via internet inside of the windows, which is already painful as no websites are functioning as they should and everything is painfully slow. Additionally i was not able to get trackpad working, but the keyboard worked directly tho.

MacOS >>> iPadOS

if people want both have MacOS virtualize or just copy the iPadOS UI and not the other way round.

I have an iPad mini 6th generation and I had tried to install antiX, a super light version of Linux with user interface, basically it works but pretty slow, what I hadn't seen or figure it out is how to install raspberry OS and now I have almost no more memory in my iPad

The lack of the ability to run whatever I want on my iPad while having a smooth experience is the main reason I rarely use it outside of note-taking. Properly-equipped iPad Pros are the worst $1500 a human can spend.

I use my ipad on the go. Ipad OS is good for 80% of workload. For the other 20%, i use VPN and Windows Remote Desktop to connect to my PC. It works great.

In installed Windows 11 on Arm on my M1 iPad pro with 16GB RAM via full UTM (with jailbreak). It's in its original OS version (iPadOS 15), so it has access to Hypervisor and it runs just as fast as on a Mac using Parallels. But UTM is no Parallels and there are several major tradeoffs:
You need to stay on iPadOS 15 since Apple removed access to hypervisor in 16. So no stage manager, let alone Apple intelligence.
Shared folders don't work, so you need to use a cloud service (no big deal in Windows 11, I use dropbox).
No external monitor support, not even for mirroring (not great since I have a 11" iPad).
Non retina resolution signal (you can adjust the resolution, scaling and aspect ratio as you want on Windows, but the signal is non retina, so it's like running it on an iPad 2).
It's totally usable, but I wouldn't want to use it as a main Windows device... I just wish I could update my iPad to have stage manager etc.
For now I'll leave it there since I have a 13" with M1 on 17 that I can update to use all the features. Also jailbreaks don't work on iPadOS 17 and 18 so there are also other benefits...
