I just bought this set of pencils for myself for my birthday in December. I have been floundering around with them for the past three days, and finally had come to the conclusion that I am the only person in the world who hates them. And then I remembered you. So I went diving into your playlists, and it took a bit of scrolling, but I found this video! Thank you! I had figured out almost all of the techniques on my own, but was only enjoying using it as paint either by dipping the end in water or by shaving off some of the pigment with a sandpaper block, and then tapping the pigment out onto a pallet, adding water and using it like paint. But that’s what I do with the Tim Holtz, watercolor pencils, so why do I need these expensive pencils? the trick for me was when you said to use these like you do polychromos. The lightbulb went off! Those are my very favorite pencils because you use them very lightly and with lots of layers. The color pay off is fantastic and it’s much easier on my arthritis. I was using these watercolor, pencils with way too heavy of a hand, and I was just fighting with them. . Once I lightened up my hand, the pencils worked great. I am not one who likes to see the white of the paper, nor do I really like the pencil look. I’m just trying to find a way to get that smooth painterly lookthat I can use on double-sided pages when I cannot use my alcohol markers. Now that I’ve watched this video, my coloring is getting much much better. It will take a while for me to find my style with these pencils but I think I am really going to like them now. Thank you so much.❤

The Tombow clear blender is a go-to for me for activating watercolor pencils, especially on thin paper, but I never even considered using a colored pen so thanks for that tip.

SUPER great tutorial 🎉 thank you! I truly do love coloring with pencils but I get frustrated with how much time it takes and how hard it is to get a smooth nice look. I hope this technique will make it easier and then I can really enjoy myself 😊

I use watercolor pencils to save my poor hands and wrists, which have major issues with arthritis, so I tend to one of three things.. either put down a mid tone, reserving white, activate while blending at the same time, then use the pencil to brush technique to deepen shadows and add accents of color.. or use them as a flat base in midtone and use my prisma over the top to just add highlight and shadow (prisma because they are soft and opaque so cover the base light or dark easily)... or put down all my color at once and activate to blend in one go. Which one often depends on the paper, the thinner the paper the less wet application I want to use on it. Every layer of water is another layer of damage. The pencils look great with those multiple layers of application, but at that point I'm right back to hours of work and pain during and after. I typically only use watercolor on double sided pages and much prefer alcohol markers when I can use them.

The palette is also very nice for mixing colors. If you ever want to try watercolor paint you can do a similar technique by putting out a little spot of diluted paint and letting it dry (or carefully drying it with a hair dryer to speed things up).You can then pick it up with your damp brush just like you do with those spots of pencil. It gives you a ton more control and is super helpful when starting out.

Wow thank you so much for doing this step by step how you color with your watercolor pencils wet and dry. I love the look of your pages. They are so beautiful. They are on my list for my boyfriend to buy me for my birthday now that I see how well they actually work !! He said no price tag I get to choose !!! Yay!

Your tips & tricks for the Albrecht Druher was so inciteful considering I have had a small set for over 35 years and never activated them until I bought the 120 set for the Xmas two years ago. I have activated them with a blender tombow and even with an alcohol blender in my 2 sides hardback books.
They are so versatile and when used as I did for 35 years as just normal pencils and they are beautiful just as pencils. I loved watching this video. If I could only have 1 set of pencils it would be the Albrecht Druher pencils (a close second would be my inktense) tho I wouldn't use the inktense just in a drawing pencil format as the ink once activated is blindingly beautiful but I have activated them in good quality two sided pages with no bleed through at all.
Thank you Shelly for taking the time to show how you work with Albrecht Druher as your main pencil brand. I watched avidly as I have never used my waterbrush pens as accents and basing your pictures as I have had my primrosa water brush pens (60) for over 2 years and never used them. I checked if they had dried out last night and to my delight & astonishment they are as juicy as the day I got them. So thank you so much for this video I was stuck to the screen as you showed all the different ways to use the best watercolours of all time (in a pencil format). I am inspired after losing my colouring mojo and for that I am so grateful.
Much love & *Virtual hugs* love from Australia xxx

Thank you for sharing this! I find watercolor pencils to be a little frustrating but I really think I wasn't using them correctly. I'm definitely going to try these techniques and see if I can fill in love with them.

Thank you Shelly for sharing all your techniques. I bought these pencils a long time ago and stashed them as I am not good with adding water to them. Saw your videos and folowed some of your tutorials and love using them dry. They are definitely softer than Polychromos and harder than Prismacolor. I absolutely love the intensity of your coloring!!!! Will try some of these techniques and hopefully improve adding water to them.
