Everyone knows that the Dallas Cowboys have one of the most talented secondaries in the NFL. And when it comes to our safeties, there’s no denying we’ve got one of the deepest groups in the league. Unfortunately, we had to make a tough decision during the roster cuts, and undrafted safety Julius Wood ended up being one of the casualties as Dallas decided not to carry five safeties on the main roster.
Just like with the safeties, the Cowboys' cornerback group was pretty much set: Trevon Diggs, Jourdan Lewis, Caelen Carson, Israel Mukuamu, and Andrew Booth secured their spots. But the depth of this group took a hit with DaRon Bland’s foot surgery, which will keep him out for 6 to 8 weeks.
Dallas has liked what they’ve seen from Carson, and Mukuamu’s transition from safety to cornerback has been smooth. However, Booth might have been lucky to make the 53-man roster after an uneven preseason.
It’s no surprise that the Cowboys signed preseason standout Kamon Hall to the practice squad. They also brought back Josh Butler, a former USFL star who spent part of last season on the practice squad. After Wednesday's flurry of moves, Dallas still had three practice squad spots open.
Those spots were filled on Thursday with the signings of running back Dalvin Cook, defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, and cornerback Amani Oruwariye.
Now, Cowboys Nation, let’s talk about that last name: Amani Oruwariye. He’s someone to watch as a potential addition to the main roster during the season. Oruwariye was surprisingly released by the Jaguars this week. He had signed with Jacksonville's practice squad in October after being cut by the Giants. Though he only appeared in one game, the Jaguars liked what they saw and signed him to a futures contract after the 2023 season.
A fifth-round pick by the Lions in 2019, Oruwariye was once seen as a key piece in Detroit's secondary. He had a breakout year in 2021, recording 57 tackles, 11 passes defended, and six interceptions in 14 games, leading the team in that category. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed just a 60.2 passer rating when targeted.
For some reason, Oruwariye struggled the following season. He was benched in Week 5 and wasn’t re-signed by Detroit, eventually signing a one-year deal with the Giants as a free agent.
There’s no doubt that Oruwariye has some consistency issues, but his knack for the ball and athleticism make him an intriguing depth option. He’s 6-foot-2 and ran a 4.48 40-yard dash. In 54 career games (36 starts), he’s registered nine interceptions and 24 passes defended.
It’s not every day you find this kind of production available on the market at this stage of the NFL calendar. There’s a reason he didn’t stick in Jacksonville, but his release was seen as a surprise. With his combination of ideal athleticism and ball-hawking skills, joining Al Harris’ school of cornerbacks could be just what Oruwariye needs to rediscover his 2021 form.
So, Cowboys fans, do you think Amani Oruwariye could be the boost our secondary needs? Does he have what it takes to shine in the Cowboys uniform? Drop your thoughts in the comments, share this news with your friends on social media, and of course, subscribe to the channel so you don’t miss anything this season! The excitement is just beginning, and you won’t want to miss a thing! See you next time!
