Not a comment about Undercliffe burials in specific but during my youth, (now 61), the building firm that my father was working for were asked by an undertaker to open and prepare a family tomb in the churchyard at Sandy Lane crossroads, ready to receive another family member the next day. So there was my dad, a workmate and an apprentice opening and cleaning the grave from early morning and they had to work all day so the funeral could take place early the next morning. Consequently at lunchtime the apprentice was sent to the nearby shop to bring pies/ sandwiches while the others had a wash. After sometime they realised that he was taking far too long to return from the shop so they went in search of him and got as far as the shop where the shop keeper said they hadnโ€™t seen anyone of his description so they got their dinnerโ€™s and decided to return to the job by separate routeโ€™s to see if they could find him. So as dad walked around the outside of the churchyard he heard his mate shouting for him to run and get the ladder that they had been using in the grave and a rope. As dad rounded the corner of the church he saw what was apparently his mateโ€™s legโ€™s sticking out of a hole in the middle of a large empty plot in the churchyard. What had happened was that the apprentice on his trip to the shop had decided that instead of following the path he would cut across a section of lawn, only for a hole to open under his feet and he fell into an unmarked mass grave knocking himself out and pulling a couple of coffins on top of him too. Dad and his mate managed to get the lad out of the hole and went to the phone box to ring their boss who in turn rang the undertaker and the priest who also came to find out what was happening. When the boss arrived he had to call for an ambulance because the lad had been knocked out and then once he was on his way to the hospital they all investigated the hole and discovered that there was more than 20coffins visible in the hole. So while dad and his mate finished the job they had started his boss went to his yard and got some planks to temporarily cover the hole so the funeral could proceed in the morning. The next day after an investigation of the church recordโ€™s it was found that it had been a mass grave unmarked of victims of the Spanish flu epidemic at the end of the First World War and due to changes in the church nobody had any idea that there was a tomb there. Everyone who had been in the tomb had to be tested and monitored and the hole closed and sealed and all the records updated.

Iโ€™d love to see a video from you about the other company graves just over the wall near the smith monument, my aunt who died as a baby is buried there, I did a lot of research about it, I have a picture of how many plots are down there, there are so many and it just looks like trees you would never know there are grave.

It's not much bigger than my front room. No way they have put 1600 people in there. I'm inclined to think they lost a few bones on the way. The utter disrespect shown to these people.
Im currently binge watching your channel. โค it
