Retired Judge Bernard Ngoepe has been appointed as South Africa's new tax ombudsman for a 3-year term. The office is mandated to deal with administrative and service and procedure complaints. But the act limits the ombudsman's powers to some extent in that he cannot review legislation or tax policy. Judge Ngoepe says his biggest challenge is to create confidence in the tax ombudsman's office so the public can feel they have someone to help them with their grievances against SARS.
