You're literally the first channel I've seen to talk sense about blue sizes. People often forget that animals as big as blue whales (or other huge marine life) have to feed such a large size. The ocean is huge, but it doesn't have infinite resources. At a certain, being to big can cost you. So glad you brought up the point about the biggest individuals of any species are usually outliers, and don't represent the norm. Loved this pal, great work. And thanks for the shot out!!

They have a whale skeleton in my local museum and its huge, and i was speaking to one of the guys there said it would have been about 40ft long. So anything twice that size is almost unimaginable.

You know the creature is colossal when their smallest "pigmy" variant is more than 20 meters

Fella, 1st of all I would like to congratulate you on this excellent work. As a Journalist in formation i think it´s pretty good and well executed. I love the content, this is first time I've seen your channel and i think I'll dive more into it since you have the type of articles and production we all dedicated to information need to do in order to keep our jobs against things like AI. Great job! keep the good work and good luck! PD. Would you consider do a video regarding... How big was the actual biggest pterosaurs? thanks and keep it up mate !

13:52 I'm reminded of Betteridge's law of headlines in these situations. "Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no." It's embarrassing how consistently true that is.

I saw a blue whale basking on the surface, while standing high on a cliff on California's I-1. I yelled, it shocked me so much. It was so so massive. It was bigger than I could have possibly imagined.

Take physics models of animals with a big pinch of salt. The physics models of African bush elephants said that they couldn't run faster than 15mph right up until somebody clocked one running over 18mph in a zoo and they've been seen close to 20mph in the wild. Now the physics models say that elephants couldn't possibly reach 21mph. I'm curious how long that lasts...

I was on a cruise ship and a blue whale came under the boat. It was bigger than our huge ship.

On people changing the measurement of something to make it a round figure:

One of the early surveys of Mount Everest found that it was 29, 000 feet. The surveyors decided not to publish this as they thought the round figure looked too much like a guess/estimate. To get round this credibility problem they added a further 2 feet to give a height of 29, 002 which they felt was much more believable, and published that.

One of the first books I recall reading multiple times was Bally the Blue Whale by Boris Arnov, published in 1966. I was 7 at the time and sea mammals have fascinated me ever since 😊

I think that as recently as 200 years ago, these whales might have reached 110 feet. Large specimens were hunted out of the breeding pool, and the oceans are being "vacuumed" clean by fishing fleets, so food supply is a lot less now. As an aside, 150 years ago, there were pine trees in S. Ontario measuring 6 feet in diameter at the base. Now, a "giant" is 2 feet. Revising everything "downwards" might make us feel better about our depleted planet, and lessen our feelings of guilt.

All these different numbers are confusing.
We really need to start using the metric system as a global society.
