Messy Mondays: I'm Offended by 'Being Offended'

I actually have discovered a wonderful phrase to counteract the "I'm offended by that" phrase. It's three simple little words; "I don't care". Or you could say, "I'm offended by you saying you're offended", and they go home and sue themselves. :D

People have said "That offends me" to me, But I usually just say "And I should care why? you getting offended proves nothing"

I was unaware that even worked on anyone.

I think it really comes down to just treating each other with dignity and respect as living souls with differing feelings and opinions, and also being mindful of the difference in the sensitivity of others at the same time. Interestingly enough, the word "offend" means to "strike a blow against, " so when we are offended at something someone says or do, we are perceiving them as having struck a personal blow against us. And most of the time, this just isn't true. We all struggle in our own ways; let's cut each other some slack, and allow those around us the room they need to grow. Love and mutual respect, never selfishness or personal indulgence, should be our guiding principle. :)

Discussions about topics are fine. Racial jokes are not. If a friend offends you with a racial joke, don't let it simmer in your stomach and you explode on them. The second you feel a little uncomfortable with the joke, you should speak up about it. They can joke about it but if the joke becomes too personal, you should be free to say, "Can we talk/joke about something else? That sort of hurt." :)

I used to be like this. I was just so darn offended all the time. But now I'm starting to learn that getting offended is inevitable, and it's all about how I choose to handle it.

And the TV thing reminds of something Bender said in Futurama: "Have you tried turning off the TV...and hitting them?" Lol, basically a rebuttal of people who watch things just to get offended (I might have been guilty of this a few times).
