FLAG-In-Schools Lesson 5: Rain Makers (Elementary Drills)

Skill: Throwing and catching

How to: You’ll be divided into two teams. Each team has several goals on their side, along with multiple footballs. When Lorenzo says start, you want to throw as many footballs as you can into the other team’s goals—without crossing the line. At the end, when time is up, the team with the most goals wins.

Here’s the twist: You can intercept the other team’s throw, and when you do, the other team will have one goal taken away from their total. But remember, an interception only counts if you catch the ball while it’s in the air.

Tips:
• When you’re throwing: Get a good grip on the ball by putting your thumb underneath and your fingers on the laces. Stand sideways and bring your arm up and back. Step forward, rotate your hips and follow through all the way.
• When you’re catching: Create a diamond shape with your thumbs and pointer fingers to catch high balls. Or make a rake with your hand by putting your pinky fingers together to catch low balls.

Great content! I like that you have videos to go along with your activities. This is my fourth year, teaching physical education. I have struggled in the past to find solid flag football drills/activities that are gymnasium friendly (our school does not have a grassy area). This year I used the NFL flag football curriculum. Wow, it made a huge impact on my students and they loved it. Thank you! so much!
