Present participles are often confused with gerunds because they take the same form. They both end in ‘ing’. The difference is in their function. A gerund takes on the role of a noun, while present participles act as verb tenses or adjectives.

A reply to someone didn't understand: 😊
Hi I'm a teacher and you are right. Indeed - he is sleeping. Is present continues or progressive. The same for:
-she was sleeping. Is past continues.
However what he meant is the part of the sentence, the word "sleeping" here is present participle in both sentences above. So the tenses are continues but the verb "ing" (sleeping) after an auxiliary become a present participle instead of gerund.
So this is how they call it, it has nothing to do with the tenses.
And for those wondering what gerund is, simply every other ing verb that there isn't and auxiliary of continues before it. And gerund is verb ends in ing ( act as noun) following a verb because we can't conjugate two verbs together only the first. Example:
I enjoy travelling. ( travelling is gerund)
I finished eating. ( eating is gerund)
Also sometimes it comes alone without a verb like in the beginning or the middle.
Example:
Sleeping is essential for our health. ( sleeping is a gerund here because no auxiliary came before it. It came after it it doesn't matter).and it a noun here.
- teachers say that studying is the key to success. ( studying is gerund)
