First video of the ECU TUNING series.

ECU Tuning is any change you make to your ECU to optimize performance, drivability or performance! It can involve adjusting and modifying many values and settings, but the main focus is usually to optimize fuel delivery and ignition timing.

In this video I talk about choosing the right software to tune your ECU. There are many tuning software out there, some free and some you pay for. Deciding which tuning software to use requires a bit of understanding of the process itself which I explain in this video.

Enjoy!

FIrst great video. Today the definitions come from the manufacturer/developer. Companies like HPtuners have the original definition files and put only just a few maps in their software. You can not edit undefined areas and HP tuners is in the hundreds of thousands to get import export abilities. For a novice you in trouble editing or brick your ecu. But hp tuners charges a lot of $$$ for a user firendly experience. Better off using tunerpro as you can edit maps with errors (unlike HPtuners when they error up). Also note bosch says the table size in the bin right before the map before the map in HEX value 0A 0C = 10x12 map. ECUs today are generally developed using ETAS, (ETK, ehooks, no hooks, etc). During compile you get a .s19, hex and whatever package like ODX to convert and compile for factory flash soft. The .s19 will even contain areas outside the Flash (maps) area) that are defined by the flash. The file that has the definitions is called the a2l and the files are provided by the ETAS.. When correctly imported you will have at least 10k maps to even 30k maps on current ECUs with every switch and byte are covered. These ECU's can no longer be disassbled with IDA pro easily like the old ST167 (ME7 generation) and before so no longer are ecus reverse engineered the same as in the past. If you want send me a note if you want a full proper deinition file for a car of yours (if i have).

your video just outlining the choices of software is a huge hurdle to overcome when it comes to tuning. Most people (like me) don't know the right lingo to even begin a google search for it! So thank you for breaking this down. Would be nice to see a table of the software pros- and cons- of each. Things like the variety of rooms., supported platforms, UI and UX, additional features, and so on. That's something I don't know what to look for in each of the platforms.

You’re spot on with the pops and bangs. Where I’m from and what I’ve been taught by my old man who was building 800hp n/a race engines before there was pcs in cars is that if your shits popping and banging it’s literally shit and you don’t know what you’re doing.😂

Hello, congratulations on the video! I really liked the tips, I'm thinking about studying engine calibration just to change mine! already have a starting point regarding software =D

PS: I'm Brazilian, and the automatic voice translation was very good! Keep including this translation and you will have a lot of enthusiastic Brazilians consuming your material!! Congratulations again!!!

Here in Argentina we've got a say: "The best ECU is the one that your tuner is used to work with". I'm all in for megasquirt and speeduino, but as you say, it requires time and a learning curve.

Awesome stuff! I watched your "Basics" video you did a while back because I'm new to this tuning thing and I've been mystified. Your video demystified many things for me, so I figured I'd check out your channel, hoping there'd be much more. But alas, there was only this one. To my great delight, it was the first of a series. Given what I've seen in the first two I'm stoked to see you more! You explain things concisely and understandably....unlike other videos I've seen for "beginners" that assume I know more than I do. So, thanks for your efforts....BRING IT! Oh, and I vote for the Terminator X as that's what's going into my Foxbody 347 build! Thanks!
