Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in 2008's "The Dark Knight" was so monumental that it will likely be the standard of comparison for every comic-book villain performance for the foreseeable future. It won the actor a posthumous Oscar, after all.

A considerable amount of work went into crafting Ledger's Joker; the character didn't just emerge out of nowhere. Ledger notoriously enveloped himself in his characters throughout his career, and the Joker was certainly no exception. Ledger even kept a diary full of character influences, dialogue, and other notes. Does it hold some hidden meaning? Here's the truth about Heath Ledger's disturbing Joker diary.

Heath Ledger's performance was literally a phenomenal. From Mark Hamill to Joaquin Phoenix all the people who played this role, Ledger's performance set a bar so high that we can't deny how much we all expect from every other actor who played (or will play) after him.

Not just the best joker ever but probably the best performance by an actor of all time. My opinion, just my opinion. The whole scene of him in the police station is just amazing. The clapping when Gordon is promoted, the mouthing of how many officers he’d killed (with the look of surprise that he didn’t realize it had been that many) and of course the interaction with Batman in the interrogation room. A truly iconic performance.

No one will ever be able to top or match that character portrayal. Rest in peace.

While the Joker role may not have been a contributing factor to any depression he may have been going through, the sister has also stated that he wasn't depressed at all. And that's something that she can't know for sure. While it can be debilitating, depression can be well hid to anybody who isn't in the person's life 24/7. I speak from personal experience.

And a performance of a lifetime Heath Ledger pulled off. From the moment I crossed the first trailer I questioned the sanity of the Joker character. Then when I learned it was Heath Ledger my mouth fell open. Till this day I still can't believe it was him. Oscar winning performance. R.I.P.

Jack Nickelson warned Heath, you do this you will open up parts of yourself you can't put back.

Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight is still the best Batman movie out there. The way the character of joker is written is simply marvellous and still intrigues me. Heath Ledger's joker quite literally transforms Christian Bale's Batman into the 'Dark Knight'. Joker made Batman realise his limitations one of them being pushing him to such extreme situations that Batman questions his own principles and is provoked to break his golden rule of not killing his enemies. Batman's tactics have absolutely no effect on him. He is not afraid of his intimidation, his brute stregnth and his persona. He just wanted to prove that even good men of great moral integrity like Batman and especially Harvey Dent when pushed to the edge of desperation can become as crazy as him.

The character of Joker in the Dark Knight is a truthful reflection of our society. We all like to beleive that we are good and law abiding human beings but what if we are cornered to such an extent that we have to make choices as difficult as the Batman had to make in the movie. What if our choices have a direct ramification on our very survival?. Can we still stick to our morals in times of desperation?. Heath's joker proves that a man's real character is reveleaed only when he is subjected to extreme pressure.

He played the part extraordinary really well. They're more than likely will not be anybody that could match his performance but there can be opportunities for actors to grow from that opportunity to be just as good or possibly better but that'll be a diamond in the rough situation. I found that his acting in this particular movie to be very well played in many situations the main character is overpowering the bad guy in the movie in this situation however the good guy at the bad guy Batman and the Joker played out as truly for the first time as equals in their part making both characters more balanced in the movie which made the movie more enjoyable because one didn't overpower the other wall

Perhaps it is true that preparation for the role of the Joker had nothing to do with his death but I think it is more likely that the gestalt effect of his drug abuse coupled with his immersion in aberrant psychology is what did him in. As Nietzsche said, " ...if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you".
