The diner is already 97 years old, but its soda machine still operates way better than McDonald's ice cream machine.

It's pretty cool seeing the syrup and carbonated water hand mixed like it was back in the old days. Now if only they'd put the "coke" back in the Coca-Cola.

Me killing my entire family in a fit of rage because the 97 year old diner stopped making coke the old fashioned way

Fun fact : the Coca Cola still uses coca leaf ( the raw ingredient for cocaine) in its flavor syrup but it has all of the addictive substances removed

I've noticed establishments around have gotten tired of people taking advantage of the soda machines and started putting them behind the counter so only the employees could use them.
0:26 isn't even a meme, it's history in progress.

The diner is Lexington Candy Shop at 1226 Lexington Ave, NYC. From a video I saw on Twitter the old fashioned coke seems to be extremely overpriced at $12.

The national institute for drug abuse stated the earliest runs had cocaine in them and that they stopped using cocaine in 1903. If this is a 97 year old dinner they would not have been around to serve coca-cola with cocaine in it.

It never had white powder. It had coca leaves, yes that is the same drug. But it's like saying crack rock is the same as the powder. One is more potent and refined. You can chew coca leaves for a little boost without going on a bender, for instance.

"Lexington Candy Shop" in New York City is the dinner in those videos. It was founded in 1925 and is still open to this day, making it the oldest surviving luncheonette in the country. I've been there before (twice actually). The food is pretty decent and the coke was definitely different from most normal soda fountains. I think they put a lot more syrup compared to most other places. But the main reason to go is the atmosphere. Very old-timey and full of Americana memorabilia. I'd recommend it if your planning to go to NYC.

i think doing it the old fashioned way makes more of a show of things. you watch the bartender perform the creation of the coca cola, and it feels more like a special treat like a milkshake. i personally feel like this is a better way to treat coca cola and other sodas, rather than drinking them with every meal like many people do, just because of how accessible and normal it is to drink it all the time from a can or a soda machine.

Fun fact: Coca leaves are still used in the production of Coca Cola. However the cocaine is removed from the leaves before they are used for the beverage. The company that does this is the only entity that can legally import coca leaves into US and is also the largest medical cocaine producer.

i disagree it's hyped up because "old = better" it's hyped up because it's different.

manually mixing the syrup and carbonated water isn't how soda machines work today, it's mechanically operated automatically. you can't see what's going on inside.

obviously these days knowing how coke used to be served is kind of rare knowledge. i don't know why this seemed to be written kind of condescendingly. i thought it was interesting to see the authentic old methods in modern times.

My parents used to have a syrup coke machine in their bar and grill. Trust me it does actually taste better. It’s super refreshing. My dad used to have 8 cups a day 😅
