I was in a STA platoon in Iraq and we observed sheep herds walking large grids, actually looking for us. Came across us a few times. "Nothing to see here, just herdin sheep. Def not looking for you guys" lol

These two parts of this interview were both very interesting. But...I learned something that floored me. He said Delta takes from all branches and fields. Anyone can try out and you dont have to be a Green Beret first.
I requested to try out but was told by my command that I had to become a Green Beret before I could try out. The 160th SOAR showed up at 10th Mountain and literally asked me to go through selection and join. I was a Chem platoon leader 1LT at the time and they needed a Chemo so they were very serious. I said no because I was waiting for my Q course letter authorizing me to go out for SF Q Course. While waiting I broke my back in a helo accident during Mountain Peak. The bird didnt crash. They took off with me still on the ramp and I was flung out, lawn darted it and wrecked my back and ankle. I wouldnt have even been there if I'd done selection and transferred to the 160th and I'm sure they'd have told me the truth about Delta selection and let me try out. Maybe I would have made it into Delta, maybe not. I believe I would have made it. I know I would have given it my all regardless. Instead, I was told BS and made to wait until I was a 1LT promotable to try for Q Course. By the time I had finally got the letter I was too injured to try out. I ended up in Intel (Primary Branch) doing other crazy shit after 9/11 but bad leadership, who it seems never even checked on my RFI, meant I didnt get the opportunity to try. That rankles.
My back never healed, mostly due to being told I had pulled my lower back muscles. They never took xrays. I was told by 10th MTN docs to run with stones in my ruck to strengthen up my back which I did for months. I unknowingly did Air Assault school on a back I had broken in 4 places and got the Dragon Soldier award too. Dont get me wrong, I was in excruciating pain. If I complained I was threatened with being Chaptered out. When I finally had enough rank to order a doc to get Xrays it was too late. The damage was done. I was grinding bone on bone at L4-L5-S1 because my discs were pulp and needed emergency surgery 7 years after the accident. Ive had 3 fusion surgeries and now Im looking at a total redo because they fused them at the wrong angle so theyre gonna go in and break the fused bone to reset it all soon.
While I dont regret my experiences and know Ive been in a position to do and be part of some incredible, historically significant operations and events as an MI officer it does rankle a bit finding out I missed out on Delta try-outs merely for being told bad information. But like he said in this interview, things happen for a reason. If it hadnt happened I may not have gone into SIGINT and did the things I did or had the impact that I did during OEF and OIF. God has a plan. We just arent privy to his designs.
The Army retired me medically and that started a whole other fight for benefits but thats another story entirely. They really dont want to take care of us after theyre done with us, do they? Sheee-it.
Good interview Shawn. Keep them coming!

The British sniper ( the one that broke the longest shot record) told of patrols being ambushed on several occasions had one thing in common, that was a man on a motorcycle at a distance seen each time.Eventualy he was given permission to take him out.

The fact that the guy is sitting in a comfortable chair, chatting about this, implies more than words could accurately describe.
