In December 2009, a group of the CIA’s top terrorist hunters gathered at a secret base in Afghanistan to greet a rising superspy: Humam Khalil al-Balawi, a Jordanian who had infiltrated the upper ranks of al-Qaeda. For months, he had sent shocking revelations from inside the terrorist network and now promised to help the CIA assassinate Osama bin Laden’s top deputy. Instead, as he stepped from his car, al-Balawi detonated a thirty-pound bomb, instantly taking out seven CIA operatives and giving the agency its worst loss of life in decades.

This script above is taken from the book; The Triple Agent: The al-Qaeda Mole who Infiltrated the CIA by: Joby Warrick

The worst realization in combat as a QRF is when you realize the rescue mission has become a recovery mission... then it's the worst feeling to process the aftermath. 22 per day...

I was on QRF got called out, to help secure a sight where a shape charge came up through the battery box of a HMMWV, cut the truck commander in Half, and was still conscious. We got him loaded on an aircraft and that was all we had heard.
That IED Killed everyone but the driver.
The smell of burning flesh always comes back to me at different times
. We were shoving body parts into body bags for a while after that.
It’s was chunks of burnt flesh that looked like fish eggs.

What some may not realize is that memory stays with us forever . I only did three tours in the 60's but will never forget the real bad times .

I grew up with the belief you don’t ask a vet what they’ve seen done or been through, and that they had never wanted to talk about. I think it’s important to let them share their experiences.

I can’t explain Afghanistan to myself. A Vietnam vet mentor of mine told me: “this thing you’ve got now, you’ll die with it.” What the eyes have seen, the mind cannot unsee.

This guy was very calm, and it may be why he is still around to tell us his great story.

It never leaves your mind. Sometimes you’re numb to it, sometimes it’s like having your breath taken away.
But the smell of iron filling your lungs and coating the inside of your nose and mouth is haunting. When it hits first your brain is preoccupied with what your eyes are seeing. So it creeps up on you.
And it takes a few moments to realize that the weird sensation and taste and smell you’re experiencing is your friends/ team members blood.
Whenever something later in life smells similar or even has a hit of resemblance it stops me where I stand. It will never go away. Those memories are like teeth biting into my soul.

I’ve never been around war but I’ve been around serial killers and the mess these people leave is haunting. Humans are capable of some serious destruction
