Mixed zones are a typical feature for areas with medium height buildings, where residential area is typically segregated vertically.
The disadvantage is that it can be quite noisy and that car access to your home is limited.
Another even more outdated approach is having the shop at the street with a backyard and a home away from the street. This offers more peace and quiet, but also privacy, but comes at the cost of low density areas and often back alleys which are rarely used and provide good places for crime.
I find the latter a nicer place to live, but it gets to the suburb problem where density gets too low.

I love this city design, with the exception of industry and places like ports, where large areas of land need to be set aside for shipping containers and cargo business set up around rail services and interstates. These areas aren't compatible with residence areas or schools.

What about all the people that want quiet neighborhoods at night? That don't want constant noise and activity where they live?

Who wants to live in a massive crowd all day and all night? City life sucks.
