I remember being in 8th Physical Science class when all of a sudden other 8th grade classes were brought into our classroom to watch Obama’s first inauguration. I was still kinda new to the country and learning English, so didn’t know why a president’s speech was a big deal. I didn’t know that his black heritage is what made that moment historic.

I miss Obama. When he won his first election I held my infant son and cried. I didn't expect that reaction, but I realized that he would never experience a life where there had never been a Black president before. When I was a child my parents would tell me how smart I was and how I could be anything, even the president but I knew it wasn't true. I felt hopeful that my son would believe that he could be president one day if he wanted to aspire to that. My son just turned 19 and I'm afraid for his future in a way I've never been before.
