You know you're fucking amazing when Stephen Colbert picks you over The Lord of the Rings.

considering how much he loves LotR, he sacrificed something very important to him to help his friend.

Poor Stephen. Knowing how much of a geek he is for everything Tolkien, it must have been crushing to miss that screening of Fellowship, and he still went on and improvised a funny sketch like it was nothing. A true professional.

Everybody in the audience, and watching this video now, knows how much it would have hurt Colbert to miss that screening of The Fellowship of the Ring

Look at Colbert's progression from Jon Stewart's understudy to hosting his own satirical news show on Comedy Central to taking over David Letterman in The Late Show and skyrocketing to one of the most premier talk shows on late night television. Nothing short of astounding.

For those who never saw that interview, Colbert was amazing in avoiding any controversy of any race-related or even undue personal mocking of Al Sharpton that night.

I feel the same way about these reunion videos as gollum felt about the ring

OMG Stephen and Jon look so young in that clip. I remember when Jon was still doing parts in movies back then. Love all these guys!! A great generation of talent!! The Daily Show needs to do a reunion ep. :)

For someone who just missed a premiere, Stephen seems to be relaxed, present, and enjoying himself

But did he ever get to that advanced screening?!

There is a quality of like an innocent charm in Stephen that I love so much...thank you so much for all these unedited clips

This should have been in the full episode. The clip makes a lot more sense now

The funniest piece Colbert ever did with Stewart was a hand off from the Daily Show to the Colbert Report where Stephen was a pirate. I still have it on tape and it kills me every single viewing!

Colbert's favorite thing is Lord Of The Rings. Hilarious bit though!

Those blazers are 3 sizes too large. They look like teen boys trying to fit in their dad's suit for prom. 😂

You people don't understand just how much of a Tolkien geek Colbert is. He missed out on something huge just for the sake of the show.

I was working background on "Vegas" (the western show with Dennis Quaid that ran for one season back in 2012) the day of the midnight premiere for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It was an early call, so I was sure that we'd be out in time. Nighttime rolled around and they informed us that we'd be staying until around 1-2am (very common on movie/tv sets), and I panicked. As a hardcore Tolkienist who's read the entire History of Middle Earth collection more than once, and whose first foreign language was Sindarin, absolutely nothing was going to prevent me from seeing it. So I went into a porta-potty near a production assistant and made the most convincing vomiting sounds I could possibly muster. They sent me home and I have zero regrets.
