Xi hugs Putin as Russia-China talks sealed with rare show of affection

Chinese President Xi Jinping surprised many by giving Russian President Vladimir Putin a rare hug in front of cameras, symbolizing a "new era" of strategic partnership between the two nations.

Despite not being known for effusive displays of warmth, Xi embraced Putin twice, marking a significant moment during Putin's two-day visit to China.

Following the informal tea and dinner event, Putin later emphasized the strengthening of Russia's strategic alliance with China in the energy sector during his speech at a Russia-China Expo in Harbin on Friday.

"Our strategic alliance in energy field has become a main framework of the overall global energy resources market. I am sure it will strengthen further," Putin said.
