How To Understand Your Co-Driver in Rally Games (Pacenotes Guide)

If you heard "5 Left into 4 right don't cut, 30 into square left, caution, over crest keep middle", is this total gibberish, or crucial information?

Screaming through a forest at the fastest speed possible requires split second decision-making and a whole lot of bravery, where one wrong move can send the car into an aggressive tree hug.

Teamwork is vital in rallying to prevent these accidents from happening. The co-drivers job is to feed information about the upcoming corners to the driver, which is condensed to minimal instructions and translated into an expected picture of the next turn.

Jumping into a rally game, such as WRC10 or DiRT Rally 2.0, can be daunting for new players, but John Munro helps guide you through every instruction the Co-Driver throws out. Let us know in the comments below whether you have learnt anything new in this video, or if you knew it all beforehand.

As a co-driver my self this is very well made and super easy for people to understand if they are not familiar with pace notes

“Triple caution” I sleep

“Be brave” is when I get scared as hell

Triple Caution is a great pacenote, but *Be Brave* actually makes me wet myself out of fear of the upcoming corner

Fun fact: the great Walter Röhrl had a quasi photographic memory of the tracks/stages and could drive them without any guiding from his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer after driving them once or twice.
In interviews, Röhrl often joked he mostly needed Geistdörfer for balancing the car and booking their hotel rooms.

As the man who made the stages and wrote the pacenotes for the WRC Games since WRC 9, I am so happy to see this part of my work put in evidence somehow ! The most difficult part of making pacenotes for video games is the timing. Because unlike real life, the AI telling notes will have trouble to adapt on what's happening in-game. I obviously take most of the time adjusting the timing for pacenotes for it to appear/disappear, as I get some external help from real rallye driver for the writing. I can't count the number of times people asks me how this works thinking numbers are the gears so thanks for getting this part of rallying under the spotlight !

The amount of trust you need to have when your co-driver calls flat out over a blind bumpy hill crest.

Thanks so much for this video! I'm 64. My son introduced me to Dirty Rally a few years ago. When he moved out last year, he gifted me with a PS4 and a full VR rig including wheel, shifter, and peddles. I love playing Dirt Rally! Besides being just good, clean, non-violent gaming fun, it's a good stress reliever. Being I have a minor handicap of audio-video sensory processing delay, I have relied on the visual aids in the game more than the audio because I do not quite understand the audio. This helps a great deal with both the video displays and audio input!! Looking forward to improving my rank! I'll get a chance to play again with my son later this month. Hopefully I'll be able to surprise him with some improvements. Thanks again!

My dad used to rally, but retired because of a broken femur (hit a tree while doing 100 or so in his mazda 323 after an unwritten crest). He told me that here in centeral Europe codrivers usually use numbers 1-10 for the turns. I prefer words, like fast, medium, sharp and so on. Great video!

I recommend turning off the on screen pace notes. Teaches you to listen carefully and doesn't distract you

Damn The fact that I learned all of this on my own playing wrc 10 for a few hours just shows how genius the “language” they came up with is.

I loved listening to Nicky Grist in every game he played his role as the mittfahrer. His calm voice and pinpoint accurate pacing on the notes really made you feel like going flatout. I'm from Hungary, and it would be nice to hear a real co-driver of our nationality on games like this, but hey, if I can understamd what they say, I'll be happy

I'll never forget the first time I heard my codriver say "chicane" and sure enough I hit every single part of the blockage and totaled my car, due to not knowing what a chicane was. Wish I would have studied pace notes when I started playing Rally games, this video was great even now

I picked up on quite a few of these when an old roommate and I would do time attack against each other on Colin McRae Rally 3. The way I learned the notes was 6 is flat out, 5 is lift throttle, 4 is lift and brake, 3 is when you get in the 90° range so lift and heavier brake, 2 is less than 90° so heavy brake, 1 you should basically treat like a hairpin. Thank you for the breakdown, it helps round out some of the words I never quite picked up in real time with only audio.

Keep in mind that the top rally drivers can process all of these notes and warnings at over 100 mph
I can’t even go 20 mph without under steering into a wall on Dirt rally 2.0

I prefer the dirt rally Co-driver because he says the number first because its easy to get the speed when going into corners

I like the Brazilian co-driver on Dirt Rally 2 because he is the same voice actor who made Goku in Dragonball Z in portuguese
