This is why you check the jaws on the fifth wheel are LOCKED by doing a tug test as well as a visual inspection. It only takes one screw-up to destroy a truck.

If it took the driver 40 feet to stop just the tractor, he was going a hell of a lot faster than 15 or he was sound asleep when it happened.

It pays to do a tug test a couple of times.

Damn dude looks like he needs a year of sleep! Those bags have bags

Maybe you should check the king pin locking mechanism first. Screw the fender.

This is why you always visually check that kingpin.

Until you get nails in your tires and you can’t see them…

Every trailer pick up:
Two tug pulls forward, two tugs reversed.
One strong tug forward and one strong one reversed.

If the coupling sounds weak when connecting, I unhook, realign and connect back up with a louder bump. Knowing that 5th wheel lock fully engage around that kingpin.

I finally got some proof as to my theory that these 2 are definitely a little slow.
There is no excuse for that accident or incident. Or whatever you want to call it except for negligence

Leave the scars of shame as a constant reminder of the rookie mistake made..

He should have his license removed for not checking his fifth wheel. He could've hurt people.

Now every trucker knows to tug and pull the trailer to make sure the locking pin is locked so that tells me that this driver didn't check to see if the trailer was secured

Brian didn't do a tug test nor did he get out walk back there to see if it locked 46 years and I've never dropped a wagon thank God

You have to lower the trailer onto the fifth wheel before backing all the way under it. Custom truck is lower then what you should have, so every trailer parked by a normal truck will be too high for that truck.

Long story short, the fender is busted and will have to be replaced.

I pulled out of the rail yard with a container and had done all the pre trip testing before pulling. And I was headed to the highway but was only going maybe ten mph and I felt the container pull loose and I hit the brakes and caught it before it hit the ground. It broke the fifth wheel but didn’t hurt the trailer. I fixed the truck and sold it never to pull another container. 😱😳

Sounds like a rookie mistake. Likely he didn't kill someone on the highway. I've known guys that made down the street from the yard before losing the trailer.
