I'm a Linux user, but I still watched this episode as it came "recommended" to me by YouTube. I'm stunned that Windows has become so difficult to install. I can grab a Linux ISO, "dd" it to make a bootable flash drive, and be up and running within 30 minutes (complete with customizations). As for Linux Skylake support - I've just purchased a brand spanking new Skylake laptop and it's running fairly well. There's a problem with the Intel GPU (which causes the system to hang when shutting down), but this does not occur when running with the discrete GPU (an nVidia GTX 970m in my case). Everything runs flawlessly when running in discrete GPU mode with the latest 4.4.1 kernel.

Good show guys. Just about to pop on another one of your episodes (will listen to it in the background while working away on some Linux stuff).

Not everyone wants the latest version. ME, Vista and 8 taught us that. This is why most people don't buy the first generation of a totally revamped model of a car or any Electronic device. The first generation tend to have problems and bugs. People in the know don't want Win10 cause of the Privacy concerns mostly. Cause the OS defaults with everything on and tries to hide how to turn it all off. I want to be darn sure i can turn everything off and that the next update i get doesn't turn all that trash back on again without me knowing. We've seen MS do this recently pushing updates out that nearly force you to upgrade to Win10 as you both discussed. The financial success of Win10 will hing on collecting data on their users.

"Everyone always wants the newest version of Windows." He then mentions Windows 8 as a bomb, but fails to mention Vista, ME, 2000... I'd say Microsoft is batting maybe .400 or .500 on releasing operating systems that people actually like. The reality is that Windows 8.1 is decent, as was Vista once fully updated. Once it matured, Vista was hard to differentiate from Windows 7.

I'm currently running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Haswell 4770K cpu and I can honestly say that I astronomically prefer it to Windows 8.1 . In fact from the advent of Win 7 I have maintained that Windows 7 is the last real operating system Microsoft ever made. So far nothing has convinced me that anything following is anything less than a tablet o/s. Yes, it's bad enough Microsoft is forcing Windows 10 on domestic users and Microsoft will be generating a multitude of angry PC users because of this. You like Windows Key logger edition aka Windows 10? Fine. Many of us don't. I don't want to have to buy an o/s where over half the things I paid for I have to disable and PRAY Win 10 doesn't re-activate it on the next update (which they likely eventually will). To say that Windows 10 security is better is a moot point. When Win 7 first came out it had the best security. It's always that way with a new o/s. The security claim is LAME. Security is a relative issue. This 18 month gig compliments of Microscam really ticks me off. Give me an o/s minus the spyware, minus the adware, minus the key logger, minus the meta collection. GIVE ME A REAL OPERATING SYSTEM. I am soo sorry i didn't learn Linux!

I'll stick with Windows 7 until they stop the updates and then switch to Linux.

I have to love the revisionist history here.

Win2K should have been WinNT 5.0, however on he server side of things Microsoft saw that their SMB network protocol just had reached the point where no amount of fiddling was going to make it scale to the demands of a WAN or GAN. Microsoft however had something in Exchange Sever which WOULD scale.

This portion of Exchange Server was known as the DIR.EDB and became Active Directory in Win2K.

WinXP was introduced as a way of unifying Win2k client software and the Win98 world and really was not a success until WinXP SP2 came along.

Vista had been developed for the Intel Itanium based 64-bit architecture and was very far along in the development when Intel stated they were not continuing down that route and effectively following AMD 64 bit architecture route. So effectively Vista was a 32-bit "upgrade" to WInXP which by this time was at SP3 and running bulletproof with a lot higher demand on the hardware specs and completely buggy and shitty drivers.

The cosmetics were just not worth the performance hit.

How the hell is it more secure when windows 10 calls home all the time. This is unbelievable naivety.

After 40 years of MS, building, selling and working on computers. Selling MS and pushing it on 1000's of systems. Running various networks I find that it is the time to uninstall MS on all 10 on my home computers. MS has over reached and should be investigated and broken up by the gov't. I do not like Win 10, barely tolerated Win 8.1. I am just waiting to see if anyone brings a class action law suit which I can join. The board of directors should all be fired along with the CEO. Now that II have had my rant. Long live Mac and Linux which I have not cared for in the past and I wish MS a quick demise.

Using Win 7 on work computers with proprietary software. Upgraded one box to win10 and as suspected the main client software is NOT compatible. In time it will but Windows is preventing us from upgrading our hardware because of this.. I just wish they would extend the time frame for all this transitional stuff :/

I don't think Intel will lose a big customer like Apple's MAC just to please Microsoft and their OS. Every time Microsoft releases a new OS, there are people that start rumors trying to convince us not to buy this OS. Now this Windows10 is free if you have win7 up to win8.1 and still, the same people find other things.

I work at a University and the IT department takes the Mac away and puts mavericks on it. At least that is what they were doing with Macs that came with Yosemite.

That whole "of course you want the latest version" is so painfully wrong. There needs to be time and work put in adapting an new OS before many of us can adopt it.

I am an illustrator and work with others online. We don't all "want the latest version" because we have all kinds of programs in our craft that Win 10 doesn't work with like translated art and animation software, drivers, and mods. We need to wait for that maturation first.

Win 10 is fine for some but a nightmare for others: some laptops have been bricked or caught in crash loops or we're unable to find a driver for our old Wacom Cintiq or we did but there's glitches or calibration issues. Entire pieces of expensive equipment rendered useless, and these are tools we have to make a living with and cannot afford to replace.

I don't like this aggression from MS setting a high-handed precedent. It makes me scared I'll wake up and can't do my job.

How do you know if your computer has Skylake?

Microsoft screwed trust with windows 10. I'm going to hold a grudge. I'll carry it for a long time. Just saying.

Couldn't apple just jump on this and make their operating system the main gaming OS? and let developers move to their OS So people can escape microsoft or something?

Good thing I jumped the ship. It's funny how Linux is now far more compatible out of the box than Windows is. Whatever you shove into that USB port, Linux will recognize. Windows? hahaha. No.
