Instead of donating or tossing a badly stained garment, try dyeing it (with Rit Dye) a darker color and give it a new lease on life!

I'm a 4th generation dry cleaner and this is how I turned an off white (go Lando and Oscar) pullover to the classic McLaren papaya color:

1) Pretreat stains and wash as recommended

2) Fill a bucket or sink with hot hot water (ideally 140 F / 60 C) and add 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent and 1 cup of salt (if you are dyeing wool, nylon or silk add 1 cup of white vinegar)

3) Shake your dye and add as needed (use gloves, your hands will thank you later)! This is a great time to use Rit's color formula calculator if you're looking for a specific color. I used 3 parts tangerine and 1 part tan to achieve papaya

4) Give that a good mix and then add your item

5) Stir and mix for at least 30 minutes to ensure you get an even dye. I cannot stress enough how important this is!!!

6) Rinse with cool water and then wash

7) Enjoy your item!

Protip - If you want to ensure that the color is perfect, dip a paper towel and see how it dries. Adjust the color as needed.

Hey Jeeves! I have a faux suede sofa with removable covers, would this be OK to wash in the washing machine with detergent and powdered oxygen bleach?

The main issue we have is it looks a bit dirty after 2 years of use, it has darkened in high traffic areas. But not terribly.
