Wow, all this time I thought colored fans, glass panels and RGB strips were the most important things, not to mention disco ball flashing keyboards.

Having money to pay for these is number one

The monitor is the most important, it judges your entire build

One thing I'd point out that is AMD's CPU prices fall dramatically after their next generation launches. So it makes sense to get a 3600 now, which will max out any graphics card at 1440p, and upgrade to a 3700X or 3900X a couple years later when they're $100-150.

Regarding ram and gaming. I recently changed motherboards which resulted in my ram running at 2400mhz instead of 3200mhz. This completely tanked my gaming performance when using a ryzen 5 2600. The GPU was underutilised, the frame rate regularly dropped from 90 to less than 60 and the gameplay experience was terrible (on newer titles). This leads me to conclude that it's worth investing the money in at least ddr4 3000 memory.

For competitive gamers Hierarchy is as follows:
1- Monitor : entry level 120hz, mainstream 144hz/165hz, high end 240hz/300hz
2- PC: Your PC will be built around the monitor you chose, as long as it can churn 120 fps/144fps/240fps at the monitors native resolution even if at min settings on the competitive games you play.
3- Mouse and mousepad: Pixart 3360 sensor variants or HERO but most importantly, a shape that fits your hand size and grip style. Pair it with a high quality hybrid mousepad/mat for a smooth glide.
4- Headphones: Open back, neutral analyticial headphones as they produce the most accurate imaging on a large, detailed soundscape. Also for multiplayer gaming treble>bass. Personally I love Audiotecnica ATH-AD 900x up to the godlike ATH-ADX 5000, basically wallhacks or ATH-ADG1X if you want the headset (mic) version. Seinheisser open backs are good too but not as godlike because their sound signature is more fun and less flat and serious.
5- External DAC: Seinheisser GSX 1000, Mayflower ARC or Creative Soundblaster G6 they will flesh out good headphones but only get one if you do have good heaphones, it will be wasted on a razer or Astro headset lol.
All of these components will make you play better than owning an SSD, having more RAM, RGB lights or owning a 1200$ GPU.

Hf playing games like AC Odyssey and SottR on 4c/8t CPU. You can forget about maintaining 60 fps and consistent frametimes throughout games, and i feel like that's what you should be aiming at in modern mid-range PC gaming.

Gotta agree, through mistakes of being a nub, getting a fancy setup but saving the cpu for last (waiting for prices to drop). I found the more i used my pc productivly, the 4/4 2200g was NOT cutting it. My first build was very backwards, but it was complicated, and i wish i seen this a year ago

I usually prefer 750w because they're in a price sweet spot, even for Platinum rating. If your power supply is overkill for your system, it'll run cooler, and often ones with silent modes, won't even engage their fan under load (within reason).

I think 4 core 8 thread is meeting their match with newer Ubisoft engine games. With my Ryzen 7 2700 and Vega 56, even when GPU bound, the CPU is 60% or so utilized.

The information given here though is helpful for those who can be easily influenced by marketing. Good video :)

Monitor is very very important, don't let him downplay it. Try to get 1440p, but at least avoid 60hz refresh, 75min, 144 ideal

This is great
You should update this every few years or every generation

dont forget that a 2700x clocked at 4.2ghz maybe good enough to make up for the ipc difference between the 3700x clocked at 3.0-3.2 ghz in xbox two ps5 in the consoles.

I'm almost done with my first build and have to generally agree.
I went with no compromise with the case (silverstone rL06), case fans (x4 noctua nf-12, x2 noctua a12), cpu cooler (noctua NH-U12A) and psu (seasonic focus 850watt). I'll never need to mess with any of this again. Since cpu and gpu are always upgrading, I just went with a 2600 and rx570 on a 450tomahawk. And a Sabrent Rocket 1TB nvme will be here in a few more weeks.
When AM5 comes out I want to go with an Asus crosshair hero (unless buildzoid gives it a bad review). Upgrade to DDR5. And then I'm only needing to upgrade cpus and gpus as needed.
I'm excited to get this up and running. Coming from a A8-3520M laptop I'm pretty sure my world is about to be rocked.

if you rating a heirachy for gamers i dont think you can put gpu at #5. sure a gpu is easy to swap out but it typically one of the more costly components and the most noticeable when changed. i would put it ahead of storage for sure. you can get 100 FPS on a shitty 5400 rpm hdd but if you get a crappy gpu nothing will save your gaming build

I5 8600k @4, 7ghz and nVidia Geforce 1080 GTX oc. No need to update.

I am looking to buy my friend a gaming laptop so I asked her what would be the most important feature for you? Her answer was a light-up color-changing keyboard she does not really care about anything else other than it being 17inch

Case is important too. I bought one that looked good, it is a good brand, it has dust filter, big fan. But in the end I realized it's too small for anything. The reason I had to go with an ITX version of the 380. Which I regret very much.

You can already get second hand 8-core 16-thread CPUs for $100-$150. See: Zen 1.
