So should you cut your hair yourself? Should you be cutting your hair yourself? I would say no, don't do it. Nothing is better than a professional doing it.

But if you really have to, there is one thing, with long hair, that you actually can do. It's one chop. So I'm going to show you.

You will need to take all of your hair and actually brush everything. So it's brushing or combing everything forward. Then go all the way to the end. And what happens here, you will take the scissor and just cut that straight off. What that will do is actually keep all the length that you have here, that goes here. So that won't be touched. And once you cut here, it will actually give you some of the layers in front too, at the same time. So in one shot you can actually make your hair look pretty decent.

The second option would actually be to turn your face sideways, comb your hair in the front, meaning bring all the hair towards you, and actually cut the bottom of it in a straight line. And do the same thing on the other side. That's the only way you can actually reach the back of your head. It won't be perfect, but it will help.

But, like I say, nothing is going to be better than the professional. So don't do it yourself.

i remember my 5 last hair experiences to a salon and they screwed up 5 times.
and it was expensive.
so now i'm screwing up my own hair and it's free.

For everyone saying "just pay for a cut"....some people simply can't. I was one of those people for about 3 years. When a haircut costs $30-40, and you have to decide whether you spend that money on food or the heat bill, well...you don't get the haircut.

Step 1: spend 30 minutes curling your hair
Step 2: Rip a brush through your hair and destroy those curls

Ok. So I just cut my wife's hair as Pierre showed (one cut) and she loves it. She said it is the best hair cut she has ever had. It totally has all the layers. I can't believe how well this worked. Pierre, you are a genius my friend, thank you.

Do you realise how much money in haircuts we've just saved over the next 20 years??

For anyone wondering if the first method works - I just did it to my wife last night. Took one second. She has long hair down to about her mid back. She wanted three inches off and we did that. Looks great. Saved about $20/$25 it would cost at a salon. Looks like I’m cutting her hair from now on.

The reason why I'll do it myself because when I tell my hairstylist I want to get rid of the dead ends she ends up cutting a lot of my hair or if I want layers she will cut too much... So YES I will do myself thank you!

I have very long thick wavy hair. I'm not gonna lie, I have incredible hair. It grows really fast and can get really long 🤷🏼‍♀️. I always want layers, but hair stylists hate doing it cause it's so long and thick. So they charge me $100 and take 2 hours to cut it. This morning I wanted 5" cut off. Called salon, not working today. Searched youtube = less than a minute and free. I pulled my hair forward like he showed first. Took shears, cut straight across five inches up, Gorgreous haircut. Better than I get at a salon. Took less than a minute and was free. GOT THE CUT OF MY DREAMS FOR FREE. Wish I could share photos. 🤷🏼‍♀️😊

With fine thin hip length hair, I was desparate for a solution that does not cost $75-100. Held out on a hair cut for almost 3 years because i refuse to pay those exuberant costs. Finally mistered up the courage to try this at home after watching multiple videos and tutorials. Stumbled across this video that an 8 year old could easily accomplish. The results were amazing!! For years i jave ask stylist to layer my long hair and few ever get it right. This was the layered haircut of my dreams. Gave my hair loads of texture and volume to my thin locks. The only amendment to the tutorial i made was trimming the long point of hair left over in the back straight across using two fingers, a mirror and snipped away. I will never be back to a salon, thank you sir!

I’ve just mustered up the courage to do this. I was hesitant (despite all the positive comments here) because my hair is really thick. It’s turned out great! Easily as good as I’ve had at the hairdresser! I would really recommend it. It’s quick and easy and never had to leave the house. If you’re not sure, just cut less off initially so you can prove to yourself it works, then do it again straight away and cut a bit more off the length. Thanks so much for this video❤

I haven't been to a salon in 5 years, I always just cut it myself. Saves me a ton of money

Every time I go to a hair Solon they always do it different then what I asked or they screw it up.
So now I cut my own hair and I color my own hair. I may not be the best on doing it myself, I'm not a professional but it still looks good and I save a ton of money. I'm very happy.

How to do this: don't. But here's how you could do it if you have to. But don't

Thank you for this video. My daughter has long hair and it was getting hard to  brush. I'm a bit limited on funds the next few weeks, so I did the first option you showed of bringing all her hair forward and cutting it across. I also cut into the line a bit at an angle with the scissors to make the line less blunt. When we combed it back, she was very happy with it! It looks lightly layered around her shoulders! Thank you again.

If you're watching this and want to know how to do it properly > first, have a shower and wash+condition hair. When hair is wet, GENTLY comb it all forward from the neck to the front (with conditioner the comb should glide through), so it dangles down in front of you. Make sure there is a thin wall of hair (not a round ponytail), and then cut evenly across in a straight line. This works better the longer the hair is. You will get a slight layering effect.

Wow. Don't skip past this one. I have long 'fine but lots of it' hair and this gave me the layers i never knew i needed. Thats part one. I did his part two to trim up the length in the back, and its perfect. I can't believe how easy that was! I'll never pay for a cut again. I had been messing with trying to cut it myself that past couple months and almost gave in to get it fixed. Super happy with this.

I actually tried the first method last night and it looks brilliant. Maybe he's just worried we'll all realise going to a stylist is pointless for simple cuts and we'll put him out of business? All I want is long hair with layers and now I've learned an incredibly simple and effective way of getting that so I can't see myself going to a stylist again until I want a style that's entirely different.

I've been using these techniques for about 12 years on my long, fairly thin, straight, baby fine hair and it looks really good to this day. I stopped using a hairdresser because they wouldn't listen to me and always cut wayyyy too much off.. Doing this I'm in control.

I love how realistic he was!! My hair is thick and almost grazing my thighs, and I'm tired of paying the long hair tax and a tip when I never do anything fancier than a trim and a few long layers. Going to try this 🤞
