Big Bang Z Pinch Machine

preview_player
Показать описание
The Big Bang Z-Pinch Machine uses opposed magnetic fields to pinch an aluminum can in microseconds. It employs a repurposed microwave oven transformer and diode, plus two high voltage capacitors from commercial defibrillators. The capacitors store a total of 864 Joules of energy and are usually available on Ebay. They are made by Aerovox and each are rated at 196mfd, 2.3kV.
A mousetrap is used to rapidly close pair of heavy relay contacts to connect the capacitors to an eight-turn work coil of #12 wire.

Just got my Nuts and Volts today and immediately was drawn to this article. Very cool and hope to make one.

Clear and simple. Slow speaking enough to understand. Thanks friend, most enjoyable.

There used to be a guy on the Inet, who did this with Coins. We had Quarters crushed into 5 different sizes, where he used different coils and energy levels. Gave these out as science presents to kids. Some information, it is the resonant frequency of the capacitor and coil combination, which sets the ringing time of the main pulse. The time is important since this marries with the thermal mass of the target, where you want a partial melting or sagging, to form into some shape. We designed induction heaters using this same principle, but where a continuous current was establish. Closed loop control allowed precise heating of the target, and this is commonly used in industry for heat treating roundish objects. Flat coils, or shaped coils also allow different shapes to be concocted.

Ohhh, seeing the Heathkit multi meter. Glad you are keeping it safe.
Would love to find a Hethkit or Simpson bakelite multimeter

Very ingenious mouse trap switch, I would say!

This is so AWESOME!!! I will be making one as well. Curious if you got the spark gap working yet and any words of wisdom on it's construction and usage.

How does one build one of these? Are there blueprints I can find somewhere or something similar? Would love to try something like this out myself, cool little scientific concept that people are barely on the cusp of understanding, why not have a little homemade example right?

Any idea on the peak current? I have a couple things I'd like to use as switching elements, including a thyratron, but I don't want to destroy them either.

Looks like the electric universe theory more than a “big bang“

Why bother using a full wave rectifier just to charge a couple of caps?

You can use these to recharge magnets. Also you can use a hockey puck SCR, spark gap, or thyratron for switching. ❤

Aluminum is not a magnetic material .. why does this work?
