MINI 3 PRO VS MAVIC AIR 2

Should you sell your Mavic Air 2 and upgrade to the Mini 3 Pro?

So let me start by saying if you don’t own either of these two drones and you’re looking to purchase one brand new there’s no question you should buy the mini three pro because they are about the same price brand new. But my question is if you already owned the Mavic air two should you sell it and upgrade to the mini three pro.

Now you can sell your air two on eBay for about $500 right now and buy the mini three pro for $750 new. So my question is, is it worth about $250 to upgrade to the mini three pro?

So I’m gonna share with you what I think some of the main differences are between the two and then you can decide whether or not it’s worth it to sell your drone and upgrade to the mini three pro. So the first difference is the overall weight of the drone: the Mavic air two weighs 570 g while the mini three pro weighs 249 g. Being under 250 g does make some of the rules for registering your drone easier with the mini three pro but that doesn’t really matter to me too much. I don’t mind registering my drone. The main thing is the mini three pro is smaller and lighter and so it’s really nice to have the smaller drone when you’re traveling around. It takes up less space in the camera bag and it doesn’t weigh as much.

The next difference I want to talk about is the sensor size. The Mavic air two has a 1/2 inch sensor in the mini three pro has a 1 over 1.3 inch sensor. That doesn’t sound like very much of a difference but the mini three pros sensor is actually 54% larger than the 1/2 inch sensor of the Mavic air two and what that means as far as quality is because the mini three pro has a larger sensor it reacts to light a little bit better and so you’re going to get a better response in low light situations and along with low life performance.

The aperture is different between the two; the Mavic air two has a 2.8 F stop while the mini three pro has a 1.7 F stop. 1.7 is going to allow a little more light to come in and again is going to give you more flexibility if you’re shooting at night or dark times like a sunset so overall the mini three pro is going to outperform the Mavic air two when it comes to these low light situations.

Another really cool feature with the mini three pro is you now have the ability once again to shoot in true vertical mode so if you’re shooting for Instagram stories or YouTube shorts you have the option now to actually film in full 4K vertical if you wanted to shoot for 4K on the Mavic air two and then crop in to a vertical shot you would have to zoom in about 1.8 times as much to fill the entire screen on a 4K vertical shot to the mini three pro is going to give you about twice as much quality if you shoot true vertical then it would be to crop in the 4K horizontal mode on the Mavic air two another difference in quality is going to be the max bit rate between the two drones the Mavic air two is going to give you 120 Mb per second max and the mini three pro is going to give you 150 Mb per second max so that’s about a 25% increase in max bit rate for the mini three pro so your foot is going to look a little bit better.

So both of these drones can shoot HDR and both of these drones can shoot D-cine Like like footage but only the mini three pro can do both of these at the same time so when shooting with a Mavic air to you to choose between shooting in high dynamic range mode or shooting in the D-cine Like mode which gives you a nice boost in dynamic range. So with the mini three pro and it’s dual iso you’re essentially exposing for the highlights and exposing for the shadows at the same time and merging those videos together in HDR mode to give you a really nice dynamic range. And because you can do that at the same time as shooting in the D-cine like mode which gives you a little bit more dynamic range to work with, the mini three pro is going to have a much higher dynamic range than what the Mavic air two is going to have.

And my favorite upgrade for the mini three pro is when you shoot in the city like you’re getting 10 bit color versus the eight bit color that you’re getting the Mavic air two. The difference between 8-bit color and 10-bit color might not sound like very much but is the difference between the Mavic air two can see a little over 16 million colors and the mini three pro can see over 1 billion colors. So the banding issues I get with a bit color with the Mavic air two especially in the gradients of the sky I don’t have those problems with a mini three pro in the 10-bit color.

So there’s a lot of other differences between these two drones but the ones that I listed are the main ones that help me decide to sell my Mavic air two and to make my mini three pro the new drone that I used to film.

Based on your video, upgrading from my Mavic Air 2 to the Mini 4 Pro should be a no brainer. Thanks for the insight!

Very good overview that touched on the main things to consider between these 2 drones. In my case, I leaning toward keeping the Air 2 as a backuip and adding the Mini 3 Pro.

I like how he says nothing about wind resistance the Mini 3 Pro is going to get blown away a lot easier

10 bit, vertical shooting, and size are the exact three reasons I’m looking at doing the update from the air 2 as well.

The Mini 3 is lighter and will fly away in high winds even with the enhanced wind factor!
The Mavic Air 2 will withstand high winds easy peasy because of its weight and stronger motors. I will hold on to my Air 2. No Fly Aways with my Bird!

Absolutely amazing comparison, as my first drone was the Mavic Mini 1, being with doubt between Air 2 or Mini 3 Pro, however your video was technically perfect with all the assertive and relevant arguments and considerations for me to decide, without a doubt, I will choose the mini 3 pro, thank you very much.

Thanks for your video!
I have only one more doubt to made a decision. I have no luck with weather conditions when I am filming - what about windy wheater? which one is better? or water/moisture resistance?

I have borh. Mini 3 might have better video quality, bit the weight of the mavic air 2 makes it so much better when filming in moderate to high winds.

I’ve watched a lot of videos and most of them compared specs which I could read online. Yours is different and excellent!
