My father's father was born in Poland and came to the US in the 1920s with many of his family members. Their family name was Kownacki, but one of my grandfather's brothers became a boxer and they gave him the boxing name "Kid Curran", so some of the family chose that name, thinking it sounded more 'American', including our grandfather. (Curran is an Irish name, and my mother's side probably has Irish in it, since it is English and Scottish mostly.) I was told in my teens that because I was female, if I used the family name, it would be Kownacka, and was told it would be pronounced "koov-nat-ska". Can anyone tell me if that is correct? I was trained as an opera singer (thought it's not my profession) and always thought I'd use my true Polish family name of Kownacka as my opera name! Dzięki, Monika!

I just started learning a little bit of Polish from your channel out of interest. My last name is Mankowski. I have been spelling it and pronouncing it as such for my entire life. I do not live in Poland and the last person in my family to speak Polish was my grandfather. I am a female. I just found out it would be Mankowska? (Is that right?). I just had this overwhelming feeling that my life is a lie hahaha. Thank you very much for this video! I can't wait to tell my dad.

In what situations would a person use the male version versus the female version ? For example, who would use Kowalski and then who would use Kowalska?

Very interesting! My family arrived in Brazil a long time ago, when Milewski became Mileski, because of a mistake in the registration upon arrival. There are many descendants of Poles, especially in the south of Brazil. Many surnames have changed because of these mistakes, but others have not, they remain the same. In my region, many of these surnames are very common.

Over the years surnames have been recorded with spelling errors.
My last name Kurzvski. But "V" does not exist in the Polish language. My great-great-grandfather is Kurzewski.
