I’ve been cutting out a pattern much like one would cut a paper heart using card stock. I start large then trim away until I like it and then trace around it as I really had no other ideas how to make it even. I very much like this method now as well!

I just take a piece of paper, fold it in half and draw one side of the shape, cut on the line and trace around the cut-out shape.
