UPDATE:

In the recent canon novel that was just released(literally just a few days after this video was uploaded) titled "The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire" Vader's rank has been updated to "supreme commander" in Canon as well!

Will make an updated video soon, but he was given this rank shortly before the events of Episode V!

Empire Strikes Back is a great example of his position over the military. Just sending ships into an asteroid field not caring if they are destroyed or killing officers who let him down.
Unlike in A New Hope, Vader just had complete power.

I always thought of him as the emperor's special liaison and right-hand man.

In other words, however much rank the emperor decided he needed to command whatever project Palpatine assigned him.

I read a book that described Vader as the “supreme military commander” of the Empire, so I already had an idea what would be said

In the vader comics, the destruction of the Death Star upset the Emperor, so vader was forced to work under General Tagg as punishment for his failure. Later on, after proving himself as a true sith apprentice Sidious rewards Vader the rank of Supreme Commander.

In canon we heard the admiral Piet calling him " commander " ( star wars 6 when the rebels went to Endor and vador senses Luke )

Not just in legends, that title was also used either in the radio play or the book version of Empire Strikes Back. Cant mind which but was one of them
