@Swizzyinsg If your perspective is everything you didn't like, you're completely right.
I'm Dutch, and I have lived in Jakarta already for 30 years. There are so many other nice things to see and do in Jakarta. The people in Jakarta are so friendly. The danger is maybe only in your head. Compared to any other city in Europe and the US, Jakarta is very safe. You're the first tourist who is looking for a beach club in Jakarta. Other tourists will go to Bali, Lombok, or any other island or region where they HAVE beaches. A lot of people come to Jakarta for a great shopping experience. Here they sell premium brands, while you have to go to Paris, London, or Milan in Europe to find that stuff. Here they sell that in very fancy shopping malls, which they probably don't have in the city where you come from. Jakarta is very worthwhile to visit. It just depends on what you are looking for.

jakarta is not for tourists, this place is just a busy city that never sleeps to work and earn money.

I've lived in Jakarta for four years, and every day, I find more reasons to love this city.

Before claiming there's not much to do here, take a closer look! Jakarta has everything. From amazing museums and vibrant nightlife to sprawling malls, cozy cafés, and legendary street food stalls, there's always something to explore.

Rather than chasing the latest beach club, why not visit the Thousand Islands? With 110 beautiful islands, each with its own unique charm, it’s a hidden paradise right within Jakarta’s borders.

Worried about safety? Jakarta is actually safer than many major European cities. In places like Paris or Berlin, walking alone without worrying about pickpockets isn't always guaranteed.

Jakarta is vast and diverse. Judging the entire city based on just one area is like judging an entire country after visiting only one neighborhood.

You spoke the truth. No offense to people in Indonesia (i love Indonesians), but Jakarta is boring as hell, and you cant get around walking. You just end up taxiing to big malls and thats it.

jakarta is more safe than many big city in western country like paris, london / new york tbh, i'm always walkin & use public transport alone by myself going back home after watching concert aroud 12.00pm - 01.00am and it's totally safe, i'm 100% sure can't doing that in most of big city in western country

For me, Singapore is a country that must be avoided because it is very boring and it will be difficult to find friendly people there.

I was in Jakarta last week, my first visit and I found the ppl so pleasant, polite and nice. The cafes, the food was just amazing.

You must be hanging out with upper class indos who know nothing other than malls and upscale cafés. There‘s dozens of museums and parks to explore. Take the train and skip the traffic! Get out of the car and interact with locals!

Actually in Jakarta there are also places to learn about Indonesian culture and history, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah is a good place to learn about Indonesia from West to East when you in Jakarta. Monas and Kota Tua are good places to learn about the history of Indonesia from the empire era, colonization to becoming Indonesia. Jakarta is more of a hangout for young people, especially in South Jakarta, than a place to learn about Indonesian culture.

I'm Indonesian born and raised in Jakarta before I moved to Sydney 4 years ago. Whenever somebody asks me about going to Jakarta I always ask, unless you're visiting someone, why on earth would you do that?? We have much nicer cities to visit for tourists! 😂

Look, to live in, Jakarta's nice enough, but people only really move here if work demands it. There's certainly stuff around here to occupy you during your stay? But if you're a tourist looking to experience Indonesian culture or sightsee, Jakarta is NOT it. We're basically a concrete jungle. We got a LOT of places to eat and shop but little else (and they kinda blend together overtime anyways). And yeah the traffic, but I've grown numb to it tbh.

I live in Surabaya and love visiting Jakarta. As a local tourist I can do a lot of things in Jakarta. I take public transport at night from west to east, from north to south and it was super safe. Not much greenery and parks, where the hack in Jakarta you have been to?!!!! I think it is just a White's issue.

I just spent 13 days in Jakarta in January . Even that was not enough time to see all I wanted... Beaches, aquariums, museums, historic sites, and on and on

Hahahaha if you don´t explore, you don´t see. Jakarta is a great city and so much cheeper than Singapore.
Everywhere in Asia the traffic is a nightmare. It is good you dont go. Millions of other people love this city.

As an Indonesian, I agree. Jakarta is not worth visiting for the foreigners unless for a business trip. I recommend you to visit other cities like Yogyakarta, Bandung, or Bali instead because they have all the things that Jakarta lacks, such as nature and cultural landmarks. Indonesia is pretty big and one city is not enough to represent Indonesia as a whole 🥰

All the points you've said are all true esp the pollution part (noise and esp air), got sick and feverish after a few days there. Traffic was a nightmare, but the people were nice to me, and one thing that I admire is that they take care of the stray cats really well. Other than that, I probably won't return for quite some time, unless for a shopping spree or a concert of artists I love.

It depends on which places you will visit in Jakarta, actually there are many areas in Jakarta that are comfortable and safe to visit, at least the people of Jakarta are quite friendly, maybe you visit areas that are less comfortable in Jakarta, well every city in the world has its bad and good sides depending on where you live and the costs you spend while in Jakarta, so be wise in commenting

Fun fact: Jakarta is sinking below sea levels rapidly each year due to excessive extraction of groundwater. Currently about 40% is alr below sea level
