laughter also is a response to being startled, and maybe a way to link the unexpected event to the emotional memory, in case it needs to be remembered - since something novel could be a threat

that's something of which you don't see a lot or often: the dark side of laughter, as i imagine a villain's laugh might sound like. maybe i don't watch enough super hero films
