“Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one….” that’s the full quote and it referred to Shakespeare’s massive and diverse talents. This quote is often used to undermine those with many interests or skills (but only because the second part is never included), but so in fact it is meant to highlight how much more valuable diverse knowledge is.

For the past three weeks I've restricted my media intake to Saturdays exclusively. Throughout the week I read, write, etc. It's been so amazing, I feel like I've been able to navigate my mind again and just sit in silence. Interestingly, when I use media with intent, I find that I'm done within a few hours. I seriously don't know what I used to watch all the time.

For me coding is a great hobby for renaissance men because the barrier between consuming and producing is very low, and it's extremely satisfying to start coding projects as soon as you learn a new concept

My hobby? Medieval reenactment. It's the hobby that breeds other hobbies. It lead me to horse riding, historical sewing, chain mail making, martial arts, and now I'm researching armouring. It's like crack for history buffs.

Fully on board with the concept of becoming a "Renaissance Man". I've progressed in my life quite far since I started being honest with myself and stopped justifying my failures. I am now chasing the ideal image of the human that I want to become. Your videos add fuel to my motivation. Although I want to rely on consistency more than motivation, having some motivation definitely helps.

Ham radio is a super super diverse hobby; there definitely could be creative aspects such as building radios/designing systems, but a lot of it is tinkering/adjusting your system or actually getting on the air and monitoring or communicating with both people that you know or people that you don't know. There is something called POTA which is basically where you go into the woods and see how many contacts you can make, there are a lot of emergency preparedness/emergency response related things, there is something called QRP which is basically where you try to see how many contacts or how far you can contact with as low power as possible, there is CW (morse code) which is very active still and quite relevant especially for QRP, etc...

In the US you just need to take a test to get a Technician license (first of three levels) and then go get a cheap ($25) radio and start dabbling, it's pretty easy to get into and you can go as deep as you want without ever running out of things to learn/try/achieve.

As far as building out a "skill tree, " ham radio is definitely one of the most interesting hobbies that also unlocks or aids a bunch of other related hobbies/interests like electronics, emergency preparedness, hiking/offroading/overlanding, pilot license, DIY...

I loved your comments about health. I am 63 years old. I fell - not old lady fall but a slippery surface fall - and hurt myself. Long story short - months of pain, surgery, recovery, still recovering and still have pain. I can't do what I need to or want to do. You are so correct about health having an effect on your learning and mental outlook. Have a wonderful day, month, year! 😁

I was just talking to someone about having a variety of interests, and how I love the idea of polymaths. I love to learn, and make art also. Then I come home and here is this video. Very interesting! Thank you!

The old video you refer to was the video which introduced me to your channel. I've been trying to this recipe of one hour for the three fields and the times when I manage it I feel more fulfilled. My hobbies at the moment - cooking, photography, writing my newsletter.

Thanks for the great video : )

@3:35 Just food for thought, that may not be the best example of Good Health = Happiness/Feeling better. I've known from experience (after multiple varied injuries lol) that this feeling 'bad' about not being able to workout the way I want is more linked to perfectionism. I think this is a very modern problem we impose on ourselves (myself included) where we feel shitty because our workout isn't optimized as possible and we failed to reach that goal. Injuries are this to the maximum, because we are forced to limit ourselves to get better. But this limitation should still spark happiness in us because we're cutting back LITERALLY for our own health. But in reality we don't, because of perfectionism.

Ah just ramblings of someone who endures OCD lol. Anyone another amazing video!

im a college student and for the past two years my routine has just been filled with studying my syllabus, i used to be curious and had multiple hobbies but it all came to an end. I really wanted to fix all this but never managed to get enough time and even when i had it, i lacked motivation. so thank you for making this video as this concept of dividing my hobby into three pieces and managing the time i give to them in a manner thats adaptable seems to the best way i can focus on meaningful hobbies instead of consuming slop in those few spare hours i actually get out of the day

I like the Renaissance. I like being curious about many things. I like the idea of becoming a writer someday. I like exercising at the gym and enjoying outdoor activities. And, I like all your videos!

So I stumbled upon your channel by looking up the obsidian video and your tips and tricks.

My goal was to have a tool to offload my mental thoughts and have it connect dots and make relations between topics but it is quite demanding to have consistent tagging.

For the last 2 days I've been working on a program that automatically reads through all my notes and automatically assigns consistent tags to each note in a way that enables connection.

Going pretty well honestly I'm excited to see how this project of mine and my note taking expanse thanks for your content by the way

Second reference to ham radio I've heard this week. It's making a comeback! :) I (and my parents) got into it when I was in my teens. Helped me get out of my shell a little bit, and I ended up talking to people in some pretty neat places. Then we moved and never set up the tower because of zoning problems. Growing up there was a great local club filled with willing and helpful people ready to answer questions. Hopefully there are still clubs like that out there.

Glad you made this video. Just what I needed to hear.

I'm currently doing a lot of hand stitching making a quiet book for my child. The current pages I'm focusing on are weather and the continents, and I made Montessori-style 3-part cards to go with them. It's been fun working on that stuff.

One thing that may be helpful is something that another YouTuber, JashiiCorrin has done with her habit tracking. She uses a low bar - high bar system. So while the end goal may be an hour a day of each of these things, setting a low bar that's much more attainable can help foster a sense of accomplishment and may keep you from giving up because you can still see you're making progress.

I did origami a ton when I was around 9-12 then stopped because of quarantine, I've been back at it for a year now after making a swan out of some scratch paper during a test, I just turned 17. A couple days ago I also recently discovered some of my dad's old books, which align with things I want to learn more on such as feng shui and medieval weapons. Before I turned 13 I read a ton of kid-level informational books, I was always reading something because I didn't have a phone. During this winter break I want to rebuild my physical foundation for basic calisthenics skills, I'm going to get back into reading, and hopefully I get to learn some more origami dragons. I've also found my old 3ds and started playing Pokemon White 2.
