Tennis Backhand Slice - Learn To Slice Like Federer in 3 Steps
Do you use this shot enough? We all get taught the classic backhand drive but coaches often neglect to teach one important shot...

The backhand slice can be an effective tool to dismantle your opponents game.

You can use it to neutralise the point by keeping the ball low, as an effective attack and approach shot or simply a way to get you out of trouble even if chasing a drop shot.

There is a reason Roger Federer regularly chooses to slice his backhands with great results...

Did you know there are different variations of the slice every player has to learn in order to have full mastery of the shot?

In this tennis slice video for player who would like to know how to slice in tennis we break down the slice into 3 steps:

- the path of the racquet and swing
- the racquet face at contact
- the follow through after contact

Full understanding of these 3 phases of the slice will give you the ability to hit effective slices and choose the correct type of slice depending on the situation.

Happy slicing!

I started playing tennis only a couple of years ago and I'm quickly improving my rating and winning tournaments in the area. People ask me where if I ever got lessons. I tell them I watch YouTube videos and they never believe me. :-)

Federer is why i started to play tennis. Watching him play was just magic. Especially this move, i practiced it for such a long time to keep it as long as possible on my racket to give it this weird spin and slow it down as much as possible. Back then i always played tennis with a friend of mine who was a bit overweight, needless to say i was banned from using that move against him because he couldnt make it to the net fast enough.

Been learning to slice this summer. This is the best backhand slice video I've seen so far. Very clear. Good instruction covering all the scenarios. I will put these principles into practice. THANK YOU!!!

Good coaching lesson. You got to all the basics in the shortest time vs other lessons I saw on YouTube. My children are finally playing tennis, and I wanted to find a slice & eventually drop shot lesson that gets to the point without talking too long and you nailed it. This is good stuff folks.

What i like is that this video emphasized a variety of applications of the slice which no other video on youtube touched upon: value added. For instance inside out slice is kind of hard for me to hit in the left corner of the baseline while jab slice i hear about for the first time. What i would advise to add to this video is offensive vs defensive slice when to use and how with demonstrations.

Superb video. Chock full of tips to merit watching twice.

One point I slightly diverge from you, Alex: I find in watching slo-mo clips of the greatest slicers of all-time that the racquet face at contact is less open than many think. It certainly helps me to avoid hitting high floating slices when I imagine the racquet face being less open, even on low shots. Also, your instructional video in Part III (the follow-thru / finish) alludes to, without actually stating, how much of a 'shoulder shot' the slice is, as opposed to most recreational players who strictly 'arm 'it'.

Thanks much.

Thanks a lot Alex for dissecting this often vague but hard to grasp technique. I often have a hard time to hit an effective slice shot, end up giving the opponent an opportunity to attack. This video is very helpful 👍👍😀

This is a good tennis lesson. I get what he is saying....you don't need a big follow through. My local pro said to do a short jab motion...for all his slices.

I'm in high school tennis this year witch is also my first year and slicing the ball is my most favorite way to hit it but I'm having problems with my backhand slice and this helps a lot

I have a unique slice backhand with a low take back and swing across the ball kinda like a combination of Steffi Graf's low take back and Roger Federer's follow through which produces a faster hard hitting ball that doesn't float in the air due to the lack of underspin as the spin is more side ways, but when it lands it shoots through the court more and stays lower than your typical underspin slice. It's an offensive shot that most people I play don't know how to deal with it cause of the pace and the low trajectory. I discovered it's actually way better than a typical slice BH which tends to travel slower in the air due to the backspin and sits up more when it lands giving the opponent's more time to set up the point. The low take back allows you to swing forward to the ball at contact which produces the pace and the follow through across the body produces the side spin which skids through the court and doesn't impede the pace of the ball in the air as much as a backspin slice. In fact it's so good as an offensive shot that I use it for defence as well which typically draws an unforced error from the opponents cause they don't know how to deal with the pace and spin. Try it and you'll see. It's works wonders for my game as it helps me set up my forehand for winners!
