One last thing to mention is that the arm (at the elbow) goes from bent to straight as part of the stroke.

Federer always had the best slice. Certain players do it very well. Rafa too. Federer makes it look natural too. Some players it looks awkward and not so pretty. Novak’s slice always looks awkward and unnatural. I used to love slicing the ball - sometimes I could do it with the racket head pointing to the side and get the slice to shoot to the left. A most satisfying stroke.

i love the backhand slice, but someone recently told me it was not good as it was only a defensive stroke, but i prefer it to control pacing

I like how you hold on to the ball during the shot

This slice is more like the American slice which is more of a driving shot with your body weight going into the ball like an old school approach shot. The European slice is more of a defensive/change of pace shot where the emphasis is more on keeping the ball low and applying the maximum amount of backspin on the ball. Very effective on grass and any other low bouncing surface like indoor carpet.
Very good shot to learn for the feel and for improvisation especially in doubles or when returning big serves.

Yes...BUT...Patrick you failed to mention a critically essential component of a successful slice BH--that being How and Why the back arm reaches back to nearly being parallel to the baseline..this movement keeps the front shoulder from flying open during the forward swing of the racket arm

Lot of people think slice is backspin . Actually it’s backspin plus side spin. Infact it’s more side spin
