HBCU’s or historically black colleges and universities are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving African Americans. Most of these institutions were founded during the Reconstruction era after the Civil War and are concentrated in the southern region of the country. In the mid ‘80s, the idea was born for a tv show that takes place on the campus of an HBCU, located in the south, as the spin-off of the popular NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. That spin-off was called A Different World.

My favorite guest star of "A Different World" is hands down Diahann Carroll as Whitley's mom. For me, Diahann always represents class, beauty, talent, and glamor, and she was the perfect choice for that role.

A Different World was one of my favorite shows growing up in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Such great story lines and characters. I actually wanted to go to a HBCU but never did.

One of the best shows ever created! This show means a lot to me. PSA: we don’t acknowledge the first season (it was okay, but it wasn’t iconic to me) “idk her”- in Mariah Carey’s voice.
