Harry Potter Characters: Good to Evil

After doing Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, we thought that this video was overdue. The wizarding world of Harry Potter is one of the most beloved film franchises of all time. The Harry Potter series, spanning 8 movies, chronicles the adventures of the young wizard, Harry Potter, and his quest to stop the evil Lord Voldemort. Based on the book series by JK Rowling, the Harry Potter franchise has given us so many great moments, characters, creatures, and more. These characters and even the creatures will be the subjects of this video, as there are several interesting and complex ones in all 8 movies. So, keep in mind this will not include any characters from the books. This video strictly covers the films, and it will neither include the Fantastic Beasts movies nor the play titled The Cursed Child.

I don't believe the Basilisk can be considered evil, unlike Aragog he is not intelligent, he is a beast of instinct raised to serve his Master. The requirement to be considered good or evil is whether or not you can make the informed choice to undertake one action over the other

Interesting list, but even by the criterion of sticking to the films, many characters were left out. On the good side, Nymphadora Tonks, Bill Weasley, Fleur Delacour, Filius Flitwick, Nearly-Headless Nick, and Viktor Krum should have warranted a mention, and quite a few others (like the Patil twins and Charlie Weasley) would also be good for completion's sake. Sybil Trelawny would probably be in the grey area, albeit at the high end. And I'm not sure how so many creatures were discussed with no mention of Nagini beyond a passing mention of her fate at Neville's hands--Nagini definitely deserved a slot in the evil section. I'd also quibble with placing Harry and Dumbledore so high and Draco so low on the list. That said, it is a fine list overall.

Honestly the most pure good character in the film series in my opinion is Lily Potter. Her love and self sacrifice for her son is what helped defeat Voldemort in the first place so why not have her start the list

Quirrel is ranked too low here, IMO. I didn’t really think there was much that distinguished him from the other Death Eaters (serving Lord Voldemort, endangering Harry, etc.). His motive for serving Voldemort was initially due to wanting more power for himself (since most saw him as a rather weak wizard, albeit intelligent) rather than pure-blood supremacy idealism. Later on, it was primarily due to fear rather than actual loyalty, like the more dangerous Death Eaters. Also, the nervous/anxious thing wasn’t completely an act; it’s been said that he was always like that, way before he started serving Voldemort. Personally, I would put him either right below or right above Wormtail.

I think Snape belongs on the lower side of evil as opposed to grey area

He bullied and tormented his students so badly one of them was more scared of him than anything else and most of the good he’s ever done was caused only by a creepy infatuation with a woman who hated him because he decided to throw racial slurs at her…

I think a lot of people romanticize Snapes obsession with Lily instead of seeing it for what it is, a creepy obsession

A fun fact for ppl who didn't read the books: in the last one, there is actually a pretty surprising scene featuring Harry and Dudley. Dudley is confused why they are leaving Harry behind and wants Harry to come with them and they have a pretty heartwarming talk. Harry "jokes" that the Dursleys think he's the waste of space, and Dudley denies. And they shake hands. It kinda shows how Dudley finally matured. Because yes, he was awful, but he was basically brought up to be this way by his parents.
