태평양 바다 위에서 5개월을 버틴 두 여성
Now to a truly amazing story of survival...
Two American women and their dogs survived for months adrift at sea, …until they were spotted by a fishing ship and were rescued by the U.S. Navy last week.
Park Se-young has more on a tale that resembles a storyline out of Hollywood.
A trip gone horribly wrong.
These two American women from Hawaii were trying to sail for Tahiti in a small sailboat, …when bad weather flooded the engine with water and damaged the mast.
They spent about five months at sea, until they were rescued last week by the US Navy …about 1,500 kilometers southeast of Japan.
(English)
"When we saw you guys coming over the horizon, it was like, 'Oh god, we've been saved ' It was the most amazing feeling because we honestly did not believe we would survive another 24 hours in the current situation."
The women, who set sail on May 3rd, say their journey was derailed by storms and multiple shark attacks.
The engine broke at the end of that month, and then the ship lost its communications capabilities.
Luckily, the two had prepared for a long trip …with water purifiers and a year's worth of food.
(English)
"We had dry goods. We found that cans don't work. So beef jerky, oatmeal, rice, pasta, dried fruits, nuts.
By the time they were rescued, however, they had eaten about 90 percent of their food and the food for their dogs had been completely consumed.
That's when they were spotted by a Taiwanese fishing boat, which contacted authorities on the US territory of Guam.
The sailors were rescued by the US Navy and brought ashore at an American naval base in Okinawa on Monday.
