Microsoft Office for Mac has always been a bittersweet relationship. I use it out of necessity but I had the ongoing cost. I decided to make the switch to OnlyOffice which, in my opinion, is the Microsoft Office alternative everyone needs to try.

7:34 - I use OnlyOffice on Windows and Linux, and you can grab the Tab and drag it to the side creating a new window so that you can have a word doc or a spreadsheet side-by-side or on two separate monitors if you want.

Great video. The only problem I find with people using OnlyOffice is that they find it difficult to save the document correctly so people who are using MS Office could read the file. You should do another video on how to correctly save the files for best compatibility.

I bought Office for Mac when I had an older iMac. They stopped supporting it and I’ve been limping along with Pages and Numbers but I just wasn’t as proficient at it. This sounds like a great option. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. 🐬

Pages, numbers etc is free with every Mac 🤷🏻 Google docs too. But great to have alternatives.

You’ve done an excellent overview of this product. But several things strike me here. One is that you’re advocating FOSS on a proprietary platform (MacOS).

Another is that there have been many free open office projects over time (OpenOffice nee StarOffice and now LibreOffice). And plenty of free cloud based options too. And if you’re already on a proprietary platform like MacOS why not just use the free office suite that comes with it (Pages, Numbers, Keynote)?

Finally, the reason these come and go and none become seriously popular is because corporations don’t adopt them. Corporations don’t care that it’s free, they want a support contract and someone to call (and blame) when it breaks. And Microsoft managed to establish themselves at the right time such that there simply aren’t compelling reasons for large companies to look elsewhere. Individuals and small companies clearly need this stuff, but these are the dynamics that prevent these from taking over, even though they are free.

Thanks for the info but I would rather pay 6$ one time license fee for 5 devices to get office 365 on all my devices where I can collaborate plus the option to easily continue from where I left off using cloud solution

There is a major issue for me that is a deal killer: OnlyOffice generates image PDFs that cannot be edited.

Can you explain how to edit and merge pdf files in onlyoffice? I use to do it through libra draw but I cant find any option on onlyoffice for this.

There is no way to insert audio into slides in their version of PowerPoint.
