I never heard of thought of One Shots as actually one session. Every one shot I've been in or ran has been 1-3 sessions. Focused on a more contained story meant to be over quickly.

As a DM that has run more One Offs than campaigns, tip 2 is critical. I would go a step further and recommend that you just don’t start in well established cities of you have new or easily distracted players. Just the virtue of being in a populated area makes them want to look around. Unless your entire setting is the city, try to come up with a way to start on the outskirts or traveling to the actual objective. This isn’t a must, but it has truly helped me keep pace

Funny story, so, me and my friends have started playing dnd resently, so in our first dnd section the DM created a character (ash) so we could see how we could be if we leveled up. They where only supost to be a side character, but we now have set out on a quest with him, almost killed him, and now we are trying to get him and another NPC together.
I think we derailed that quite quickly and efficiently. 😅

I have two questions people maybe can help me out with:

1. Is it an intersting idea to have the urgency come from a rival party trying to fullfil the same goal as the players?

2. Having such a rival party would probably include like 4/5 NPC's, would this cause a significant problem? Besides them there is someone who hires the party, some NPC's who can give them information (relevant and irrelevant) and 3 key NPC's which can interact with the players or rival party.

The total time of the oneshot is supposed to be around 8 hours (I estimate 6 hours of gameplay and 2 hours for brakes)

I played one dnd one shot and i somehow managed to get the best abilities for the campaign, my luck was godlike in fights, and I kept on almost fn dying while just moving from place to place cuz my luck just disappeared the moment the fighting stopped

This channel is amazing. I've been trying to get people to dm for these past few years but no one I know plays dnd, but thanks to channels like this I feel very prepared already

I did all this, and some how they still managed to get derailed. Plot was simple. Go retreev an ice gients lost pet, in return for a big ol bag of gold. They get to the forest where the jorny is suposed to begin and the bard desided he dosnt want to spit it 4 ways and insted him and the barbarion atack the other two memebers. Now were on session 3 and only just past the halfway mark and there having fun for the most part

So I recently made a one shot the players start in a walled city and a undead siege takes place after the party repels the siege with the help of the gards thay go to the suspected location of The necromancer responsible there is a combat encounter along the way that can be dropped and then there is the combat against the necromancer in his tower
