What is Libertarian Populism?

What is "libertarian populism" and why is it so controversial?

The concept has been discussed widely in the pages of The New York Times, RealClearPolitics, Reason, and elsewhere, but its specifics - and political potential - remain elusive to many in the "Free Minds and Free Markets" movement.

On Tuesday, July 30, Reason's Nick Gillespie moderated a fast-paced discussion with two of the architects of libertarian populism: Ben Domenech of The Transom and Real Clear Politics, and Tim Carney of the Washington Examiner, as well as Jesse Walker of Reason (and author of the forthcoming The United States of Paranoia).

Thomas Sowell's been saying that very thing for decades- he has a new book out titled "Intellectuals and Race"- a scathing condemnation of "Progressives" and "Liberals" from the 1890s to today- You can see him on the Uncommon Knowledge (Hoover Institution at Stanford) YouTube page. Libertarian populism as I would define it would be the uniting of all libertarians regardless of economic ideology. We unite on the basis of protecting liberty for everyone 🗽.

Christianity is a personal belief system, libertarianism is a political system. The whole idea behind libertarianism is to keep personal beliefs out of politics...so even if you personally disapprove of something, you refuse to advocate for laws against it. I personally think that prostitution is usually a bad thing, but I am viciously opposed to the idea of the government being able to prevent people from making choices (even bad ones) with their own bodies.

I always wonder how many of the "thumbs-down" votes are from people who just don't like what the people in the video have to say, verses those who agree with the people talking but who don't think this video is the best way to explain it.

Well said. I concur, though admittedly there is no party or political philosophy that fully upholds all the values of biblical Christianity.

Nothing I said is contradicted by that. I said "all forms of statism", not "statism". Remember that I was speaking of Hitler,

Well most people think that Hitler is right wing. The rhetorical move on the part of the right to classify all forms of statism as Left didn't really get popular until Glen Beck and Jonah Goldberg propagated the idea.. So that Idea is popular among conservatives and Libertarians. Marxism is poorly understood by our culture though, but that is because no one wants to read Capital, so most people confuse Marxism with the practice of socialism. I was referring to his determinism.

The welfare state is going bankrupt. People's human rights are being violated.

Libertarianism is gradually growing and promoting the principle of non-violence, freedom and prosperty.
