I have three D5300 cameras because they are so versatile. I use them for weddings, senior portraits, landscapes, and everything else. I have no complaints about this fantastic camera.

I really don’t care about videoing with this camera lol I’m not a youtuber. I’m a photographer so I think this camera should be perfect for me!

I bought this last year primarily because of the weight and size. My previous D200 is a brick, and increasing arthritis means I just couldn't hold it for very long. I was impressed with the image quality and the autofocus, and with the auto program set up, which I have to say often did a better job than my (experienced) efforts in manual seemed to manage. Video focus as you said is crud. But I also found the wifi and GPS (wow - that tipped the scales for me to buy it) are also pretty dire. GPS only ever finds a "signal" about 20% of the time. If you leave either or both of those on, then the battery life is also pretty well compromised. The phone app to control the camera remotely just drops out after a short period and if the phone is more than a few feet away from the camera it just doesn't work. I set the camera up on a tripod next to a bird feeding station and it would only work up to about 4 feet away, and not at all if there was a window between. The other major downer for me is that many simple changes to settings that I tend to make frequently - matrix to spot meter for instance, require a deep dive through menu systems, and there are no properly customizable settings or menu options to compensate for that. The 18-55mm kit lens is WAY better quality than you'd expect for this price point, although it does have an irritating lock button which has to be maneuvered before shooting.

Had this for a bit now, got used with an 18-200 mm lens and quality is stunning

I’ve got this camera and I love the image quality. Shooting raw in manual is something else!

I'm using this camera and I AGREE with all his review bout it. Totally a nice camera for all-rounder shots with it's 55 mm kit lens. Though I STRONGLY DISAGREE on what he said about Vin Desiel's movie.

Just bought a used D5300. I'm a hobbyist but looking to create great shots and decided that this Nikon was within my budget (thanks eBay) and was up to what I need. I was so right! This is already turning into something serious! Downloaded Coral Draw Pro for post-production. Camera came with a standard and a very nice Nikkor 55-200mm lens. So pleased!

In fact, I have seen quite a number of the Nikon 5300s suffering from two problems:
1. Ghosting and "shaky" images with the shutter speeds around 1/200. This is due to the mirror or shutter slap.
2. Back/Front focusing issues which can be, fortunately enough, removed at home by adjusting the mirror position with a 2 mm hex Allen key.

So, especially if you are about to buy a used camera body, be sure to check if the camera does not suffer from problem No. 1 (blurry images due to mirror/shutter slap).

The feature I most like on this camera, that my higher specification D750 and D7500 don't have, is the fully articulated screen, especially useful for awkward viewpoints and low level landscape and plant photography. It also acts as a screen cover when reversed. Raw files are compressed, but this is probably not much of an issue with correctly exposed pictures. One disadvantage is the absence of an AF lens motor. For tripod work I use Live View to prevent mirror vibration.

I have had the D5300 since 2018 and it has been a phenomenal camera. I shoot with a 35mm f/1.8 and a 10mm f/2.8 and it does fantastic photos.

I use this camera for not only music videos, urban photography, but also car phtography

It's 2024 but I still use this camera. I bought a Sigma art 18-35 f1.8 and the sharpness of the images is astonishing. I can also shoot in very poor light without using flashlight and get decent photos.

Low light this camera does really well with 50mm 1.8 lenses. Kit lenses are not great for low light.

The Nikon D5300 is a great entry level DSLR, however it isn't weather sealed.
If you want to buy a good weather sealed Nikon camera then look no further then the Nikon D7200.

Get the controller cord thing that takes photos when you click, and half click=focusing. When ur in video mode on a gimbal autofocus can be somewhat fixed

What is the next best camera to this Nikon D5300 because it's been discontinued in South Africa and I really love the features of this camera?

Would it be ok with a 200-300 lens for Wildlife (Safari)

What camera would you recommend that has a similar feature set as the D5300 but has good video auto focus?
