I have exactly same thinking with you, i'm Chinese which live in Finland, compare with china, it is so expensive here, but in Finland there are a lot free good stuff also, water from tap, fresh air and good welfare.

And I was shocked how expensive Singapore is ;) Meaning for a tourist: Hotels, beer.. A bottle of beer in a bar cost more than in Finland. Eating out was a different story though, cheaper and more fun than in Finland.

Yes renting a flat in Finland can be pricy, in Helsinki region especially, not to talk about buying one... There's an alternative though, I just chose a right-of-occupancy (asumisoikeus) dwelling: I first paid 17, 000e as a deposit, got a new high quality studio apartment (30m2) in Helsinki for 380e /month. I'll get the 17K + low interest back if I'll choose to move out.

As others have said, no need to renew the license often. But what you should be prepared for is the potential need to take extra driving classes if you haven't driven a car before. So I'd advise you to budget also for about 5-6 extra classes just in case so that you can have uninterrupted learning with the driving test immediately following. Don't be like me - I've saved for the license and taken the classes I paid for, was really bad at it and have to take extra; but ran out of money and just sitting here forgetting everything I've learned, meaning I'll have to get even more extra classes :D

Eeh, rent is not That expensive here in Finland. 5000 € (?!) per month is A LOT. Ofc it depends on the size of the apartment and the location but an average person could not afford an apartment that expensive. In my city you can find a nice apartment for 1-2 people for 600-800 € / month.

No, you don’t have to renew your driving license every year and pay that ridiculous sum of money. You’ll have to have a medical exam once in every 5 years (an EU directive), however, and it costs from about 60 € depending on the doctor of your choice. Choose the cheapest, because it doesn’t matter whoever signs it as long as he/she is a real medical doctor.

For comparison, a pint of beer in Canada could cost around 8-10$ in a bar. So 10€ would be around 15$. It's expensive even for us. But I'm more worried about the apartment costs 🤯

I have never Howard of a General apartment costing 4000-5000 euros per month 🤔 even the 1000 euro apartments are mostly in Helsinki only. We pay 800 of our 54 squaremeters here in Turku ansd that includes water but not the electricity which is about 10-20e per month. And though drivers licence really is expensive, you don't have to renew it until you're ole and blind 😁

Well... food is cheap in Finland, even in Helsinki.

In Bulgaria, in my city (Burgas) you need 30-40 BGN per meal at a mid-range restaurant. The cheapest are 20 BGN (€10). Want it more luxorious? What about 80 BGN then?

Also, you don't have to rent inside Helsinki itself. I am planning to go to Aalto University in Espoo as a programmer and I understood I can rent myself an apartment there for €600-700 or just live in the campus for €300-400 or so. Helsinki is just a train of 40 mins away.

You're not wrong about that, everything in Finland is either expensive or absurdly expensive, it's really frustrating. For example, driver's licence and buying a car and maintaining it will cost a small fortune, much more sensible to just walk, use public transports or bicycle.

Many things are so expensive not because theres lack of some materials to make stuff from. Or that the processes to make them would be somehow extremely difficult and challenging. Many things instead cost, or rather are justified to cost so much, due to morality or moral arguments. Example alcohol tax is so high due to moral justification. That its bad for people to drink, so we must have very high alcohol tax. It really is that simple. Its not because its expensive or challenging to make various alcohols, or that we would lack the materials to make them here.

So if one tries to find logic why basically all things cost more here than anywhere else in the world. One can only find it through moral reasons, not example logistical or manufacturing cost reasons or other such reasons. Also its not because wages being very high since they are not compared to rest of europe. And its not due to welfare being so high since its not compared to rest of europe. Free schools arent of course free and so on. So theres some excuses one could make for everything being so expensive, but it comes down to very simple moral arguments more than anything.

What is not thought often is how much it costs to keep such a huge and heavy bureaucratic system working, staffed, trained, maintained and updated through decades. No one really knows what the heavy bureaucracy system of Finland overall costs. And if it has positive or negative effect on society. So not only how much it costs in monetary sense, but whether it costs or adds to social capital also.

I agree that driving licence is expensive. But you know, labour is expensive, the driving teacher has to get her/his pay. + gasoline + insurance + the car. + the government takes a lot of money. because they can.
