As for its uses... well, I'm pretty hard-pressed to find any. It seems like an extremely obscure character. I did a search of "varsigma" on Wikipedia, leading me to several different esoteric math articles I couldn't understand. The only exception is the supersilver ratio article, but I couldn't find any use of the letter in the sources referenced by the article.
