0:27 Bopomofo represents the first four "letters" of the so-called Chinese alphabet - created in China, but now used only in Taiwan. This "alphabet" system was designed to help youngsters read/pronounce words they encountered. There are thousands and thousands of Chinese words - it takes many years to master enough of them to read a book - so how do you get youngsters to read an entire chapter of anything? This is where the alphabet comes in. Grade school textbooks in Taiwan are printed in Chinese - with bopomofo alphabet next to each word. Starting with Junior High, textbooks would drop bopomofo - students are expected to have mastered enough to read words and no longer need the 'crutch' of the alphabet.

The name 'bopomofo' is simply the first four letters of the alphabet - just like ABC is the first three letters of the western alphabet. In the west, we are told to learn our ABC's. In Taiwan, kids are told to learn their bopomofo.
