I prefer the $200 machine it goes just as deep as the $600 machine doesn’t have all the bells and whistles but it sure gets the job done It’s a very capable machine.

Just bought a vanquish 340 today. $60 for one that was in such good shape that it still had the original minelab batteries in it, almost fully charged. I love how simple yet capable it is, pretty perfect for me as a beginner. It's only day one but I'm already hooked and thinking about what nice machine to invest in. Will probably use the 340 for a while to learn more, but I really like the overall deal you get with the Xterra elite.

In my humble opinion, your first metal detector should be extremely bare bones. You should get the bounty hunter tracker IV. It simply beeps when it sees metal. You dig every hole until you learn all that you can. Then you go on and buy a simplex. Then it’s really optional to get an SMF or anything fancier than the simplex unless you’re doing beach / mineralized ground. I think a majority of people can fully enjoy the hobby with nothing more complicated than the settings a simplex BT or Ultra provides. That’s my advice for any newbies seeing this.

How does it affect my enjoyment? I am interested in metal detecting but I am not interested in digging 2 foot deep holes unless I know for certain that it's gold.

I have had the 340 for about a week. I have found 2 tacks, 2 hot wheels, foil, aluminum and enough pop tabs to make a necklace out of. Still in the testing phase.

And i guarantee the cheaper vanquish 340 matches it on depth and is more accurate on i.d. i own both 😂

Easy. Vanquish is not waterproof. It uses same software as Equinox 800, with less depth than a 800.
