I thought I'd share my experience of the annual 30 minute air raid drill here in Taipei. It started at 13:30 on the dot, and finished at 14:00 precisely.

The streets and roads emptied quicker than I could process it. And the same when traffic and human movement restarted again.

Quite a surreal experience to say the least, seeing a completely silent and eerily empty Taipei, mid day.

As a school students in Taiwan in the 80's & '90s, we had to jump into the school bunker, crouch down, cover our eyes and ears during this drill.

We do this every year. I was in the movie of mission impossible. We will keep doing this as long as CCP is still there.

My apartment is very close to a siren and it’s quite loud. Though my cats are hardly bothered by it. Otherwise, the drills are staggered across the island, so if you time your travels right, you can experience the drill multiple times.

Hey Dan, if you have a chance, definitely visit Taroko Gorge (Hualien City) and Kenting (Kaohsiung). The high-speed rail system here is fairly convenient. You can literally go back to Taipei in a few hours. There are a lot of fun places waiting for you to explore outside of Taipei. ❤ Restaurant and hotel costs are also much cheaper outside of Taipei.

I am not surprised that you would make a video about the drill.👍 Last year, I was stuck on the highway on a bus, and all cars turned off their engines. Today, I was underground at the Taipei main station. Some news reporters were there as well. Huge crowd, we were not allowed to go upstairs.

Those air raid sirens are avtually ACA Cyclone 125s, they are the loudest omnidirectional siren in existence

Just be careful, they do this on an annual basis and they (government/police/law enforcement) taking it seriously, they do fine people who disobey, and the fine is kinda expensive
