I have been a flight attendant for 26 years and you wouldn’t catch me on those small private jets…

Glad you’re ok. Retired military pilot here. Auto pilots don’t take control to avoid a collision except when equipped with the technology ILSRWY4 states below…and then it’s not likely to stand an aircraft abruptly on it side. An autopilot simply keeps an aircraft on a designated course and altitude. It may have been turbulence from the bigger commercial airplane that caused you to go into the unusual attitude. That said, I’m wondering how ATC allowed your aircraft to get that close. If on an IFR flight plan there should have been enough separation to avoid situations like that. Anyway…ya got a good shaking and here to tell about it. ❤

Just glad you two are safe...
and as if air travel isn't scary enough these days.

That's like the pilot saying, "Plane Fall Down Go Boom"

The pilot was flipping through his incident checklist. Anytime an airplane experiences an issue/warning indicator, or in this case, having the Collision Avoidance system engage, the pilots run through a checklist to make sure all the instruments are reading properly, set to the correct settings, airspeed, altitude, flaps, etc.

Flipping through the binder is a required procedure. It had nothing to do with the pilot being confused, clueless or unskilled.

Glad you’re okay! Hit me up for your next private jet! PJ Paul - Vault Aviation 🛩️🛩️

Unstable air from the big plane = loss of lift to the small plane and down you go .

Be greatful for his honesty. You can laugh now, but it could have been very different.

Air Traffic Control have got some 'splaining' to do! Very glad you're still with us Megyn.

I’m a GA pilot and I’ve had two friends who each have been caught in the turbulence of a commercial jet landing at SJC. One plane flipped all the way around. The other half way before they righted it. Think of turbulence as two horizontal tornadoes coming from the wing tips of a jet.

I am a flight attendant and I believe that you are describing “wake turbulence” which is uneven air as a result of being too close to another aircraft.

About a year ago my airline had a near mid air in South Florida with a private jet. It was my FLL base crew involved. Our Captain and the private jet both had to make evasive maneuvers.
As a result, all four flight attendants got slammed to the floor and G force kept them glued to floor.
My friend is still on OJI as a result of a broken hand!

In our case it was an air traffic control error. Apparently, the current situation with overworked ATC is huge problem

I am so glad that you both are okay and I think that it’s good that you are talking about it publicly and dealing with that unexpected trauma in real time!

NEVER get on a private plane that you don't personally know and trust the pilot with your life! So many famous ppl have died in private plane crashes arranged by somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody with a plane.

The fact that are working, and laughing just a few hours after this is impressive. I would be curled up in a ball and vowing to never fly again.

Megan what Trump really needs to do is have his son or someone stand next to him at this rally this weekend and say everything that Trump is not allowed to say due to the gag order!!!!

a technical term that pilots are taught? I'm so happy to see you are both able to laugh about it

The FAA is concerned about diversity in their hiring rather than getting the best and brightest air traffic controllers. Thanks for posting.

Fly enough and you will have a hair-raising experience. Mine came over 40 years ago flying on a Convair 580--a very tough and capable twin-turboprop airplane. We hit clear-air-turbulence (not easily detected by radar back then) and we lost 8, 000 feet of altitude in a matter of seconds. Luckily the seat belt signs were on or passengers would have been gravely injured. It popped about a hundred rivets on the starboard wing and bent the starboard prop. The pilot feathered that prop for the rest of our flight to the airport. Fortunately the Convair 580 could easily fly on one engine. Quite the adventure. Yes, we landed safely. I'm still here.
