"We had Hitler in the 30s and things were fine until we got into the 40s" Is it just me or was that arguably the dumbest thing Bill Maher said in that whole conversation?

Not true about Hitler being “ok” in the thirties!!!
He did extreme things from the very beginning.
1934 - end of democracy, beginning of dictatorship.
From the early 30s - constant territorial demands of neighbouring countries and threats of War.
1938 - crystal night (before that many years of attacks, violence and discrimination);
1938 - Austria Anschluss and Czechoslovakia taken.
To say that Hitler was not extreme (!) in the thirties and then “suddenly” in 1939 he started a war is naive and rewriting history. Everyone knew he was a ruthless dictator (not for his loyal german people of course) and a threat to all his neighbours since at least 1934!

In 1935 the Nuremberg laws were enacted. It is not like the thirties were normal under Hitler. he showed his hand pretty soon.

I love it when Bill puts on his historian hat and the shows, well, you be the judge. He said "We had Hitler in the '30s and things were OK..." at 2:00. Here is a short list of the things Hitler did in the 1930s that were apparently not too bad: 1933 The Enabling Act that suspended civil liberties including speech and assembly; 1933 opposition parties were banned, the Gestapo was established, and the first concentration camps opened for business (Adolph was busy that year); 1934 Night of the Long Knives when HIitler murdered dozens of political opponents within his own party; 1935 Nuremberg Laws which stripped Jews of their citizenship; 1935 reintroduced conscription to build to set the stage for invading other European countries; 1936 occupied the Rhineland; 1938 Kristalllnacht, coordinated nation-wide attacks on Jewish businesses, synagogues and homes; 1938 annexed Austria; 1939 invaded Poland, starting WWII.

This is such a terrible way to get to the actual truth of these complex matters. Arguing in front of an audience, desperately grabbing the nearest thought and spitting it out just so that you seem confident and correct. Bouncing around from point to point without any real follow-up.
