Many thanks for this brief but highly engaging presentation. My own (part time) laboratory pursuits are in the study and replication of the early sciences, from early alchemy (a subject only recently getting the scholarship and respect it deserves) through the work of Faraday. All such persons across this huge span tended to be largely solitary explorers, something now probably quite rare. Faraday worked hands-on and with exceptional diligence; I recommend reading through his Chemical Manipulation of 1830 (Kessinger Publications). This is an exhaustive overview of laboratory practices, including early electrochemistry, and offers many insights into Faraday's working habits.

"Faraday, Maxwell & the Electromagnetic Field: How Two Men Revolutionized Physics" by Nancy Forbes & Basil Mahon is a great read. The collaboration between Faraday and Maxwell is sorely under-appreciated, both great Christian men and great friends.

"The Forgotten Genius of Oliver Heaviside: A Maverick of Electrical Science" by Basil Mahon is also a great read. Oliver Heaviside and Josiah Gibbs advocated the use of Vector Calculus to formulate Maxwell's Equations, as we know and love them.
