I would steal a car if it was downloadable.

The funniest part about this ad is, it uses pirated music. They didn't even get permission to use it.

They also made pirating look insanely cool in that ad. It was like they tried advertising piracy.

"If buying isn't owning, then pirating ain't stealing."

I wouldn't steal someone's car, but if I could walk up to some dude's porsche and magically duplicate it you're damn right I would

So not only did the advertisement encourage people to pirate, by showing people about piracy, but by also pirating the song used in the ad.

I would in fact, steal a car, in the context of online piracy, the original owner wouldn't lose his car.

It is also said that the font and music in that ad were pirated... Ironic.

Most people, especially those with a stable income, don’t want to resort to piracy. When everything was available on Netflix, piracy dropped significantly. People want two things: convenience and to not feel like they’re being taken advantage of. Piracy platforms are not only free, but they're also far more convenient than constantly switching between multiple streaming services and paying for all of them. The current streaming model has revived a piracy movement that was more or less dead.

If purchasing isn’t ownership, piracy isn’t theft

The worst part is they made the "you wouldn't steal a car" advert unskippable, so if you did try to be "good" and bought your movies you were punished for it by being forced to watch it Every Damn Time you wanted to watch something. If you pirated it however...

"how did you watch one piece, I thought you were broke"

Didn't the ad also made use of music it wasn't licensed to use which made the ad even more hilariously ironic?

Fun Fact 2: The music used in the anti-piracy ad "You Wouldn't Steal a Car" was stolen from composer Melchior Reitveldt. Reitveldt wrote the music for a film festival in 2006, but it was later used in many movie DVDs around the world. Reitveldt sued the ad agency for using the music without permission. So the Sound track they used in the anti pirate ad, was itself pirated.

"But it backfired massively. The rate of car theft went through the roof after the ad released"

If you could copy a car you would. If you could copy a TV, you would.

It’s like how YouTube’s anti-Adblock campaign made unlock downloads skyrocket.

Stealing removes something, downloading duplicates something.

What was annoying that it was unskippable so you were forced to watch an ad to tell you to stop stealing even though you bought the fucking thing.

What is nice about piracy is that you don't have to watch unskippable garbage.
